How would you share a mega-lottery win

I would make sure all my family were ok and then establish a Charity to help Young Carers. I recently saw a tv programme documenting their plight and was amazed to find how little help they receive. To help this group of people would be wonderful
.
Young carers do an amazing job. In my area, those who are registered receive two hours respite a month, where they get the chance to spend leisure time with others in similar situations. During the summer holidays, they have three afternoons, all with an educational bias (not that I'm against education, but no 'chill out' time)0 -
I wouldn't share it. I wouldn't tell anyone about it. I'd keep it to myself.
My mum told me this story about a guy she used to know who won what was a relatively decent amount on the football pools years ago. Picture in the local paper and all that. Apparently four years after he died his family were still getting begging letters.
The thing is, as much as you might trust someone, people let stuff slip. Even if you opted for anonymity all it takes is one person to tell some blabbermouth and before you know it everyone knows you're the one who won the lottery. Stuff like that spreads like wildfire. And these days, it's not hard to track people. A little bit of effort and you can find almost anyone's personal information. I couldn't be bothered dealing with thousands of sob stories from complete strangers.
There was a programme on TV about lottery winners and the amount of begging letters and not just that but threatening letters - letters such as "Give me X, or I'll kidnap your daughter!". One couple even left the UK because they feared what would happen to their family if they stayed here. One of the Euromillions winners who wanted to carry on running their little music shop had to close it because of people coming in asking/badgering/demanding money.
So yeah, if I won, I wouldn't share it and I'd keep it a secret. I'd keep an eye out for friends and I'd perhaps do a little more when it comes to giving them gifts. I'd pass a bit of money their way in ways that weren't overt or obvious but no one would ever know.
You do actually have lots of good points here. Good post. :TProud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!
You're not singing anymore........ You're not singing any-more!0 -
First job would be to get the best advice. My IFA's face would be a picture!!
I wouldn't touch the capital until I knew how much income I would get from it. After ensuring an income that was more than sufficient to meet my needs (so that some of it could be re-invested to mitigate the effects of inflation), and assuming there was some capital left over, I would invest some of it in projects that would actually do some good in the world, and some of it in projects that would keep the money coming in. I think having that much money would be a full-time job.
I wouldn't give anything to the kids - in fact I think I would keep very quiet about exactly how much I'd won. However, I would spend some of the income from the interest on things that keep/increase their value - art, antiques, jewellery etc. And the kids would inherit it all in the fulness of time anyway. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
I'd give a lump sum so my mum and stepdad individually.
I'd buy in laws a small house.
I'd buy BIL & SIL a large house and a car each.
I'd put some away in a trust fund for my young siblings.
Some of it I'd give to Dogs Trust and then the rest is mine.0 -
I thought about this when that couple won £150m on Euro millions. In the end, I thought I would keep £2m for my family (wife & kids), £1m for all my and wifes immediate relations - the rest I would honestly give to the state....
The reason is two-fold..
1) The state helped bring me into the world via the NHS, the NHS saved my wifes life a few years back, the state has educated all my family, built and maintained roads, made food and goods safe in the shops, kept us safe from the Russians during the cold war and much more. Now I have had some luck, time to pay some of that back.
2) That win happened when the Euro-crisis was at a major point and it delighted me to think of all those contributions to the prize fund paid in by millions of Frenchies and others going to the UK state they were all complaining about...0 -

It's so hard, isn't it?
I'd want to keep a big win quiet as well but once you start spending or giving away loads of money, it's impossible.0 -
I was in two minds about this, on one hand I would like to keep it quiet, that way certain family members would not suddenly remember that me and my kids exist.
On the other hand, I kinda like the idea of having the publicity, but going on tv/whatever to say that I will sort out those that deserve it, and if you don't hear from me, you should ask yourself why! (but still wouldn't give them anything)
I would sort out my MIL, as she has always been there for me, so would enable her to retire from work and buy her somewhere big enough for her and her card making stuff.
I would put money aside for my kids, maybe help my daughter open her own restaurant. And I would enable my husband to either go part time or be able to give his time to a charity/museum.
I would buy us a new house, one big enough to house a model railway for himself, and then I would quit work, open a craft shop/studio and spend my days making (and hopefully) selling jewellery and other beaded things.
I would also give money to the British Legion, the local Air Ambulance and the RNLI, along with the local hospice.0 -

Often thought about this so if me and hubby won big I would like...........
We don't want anyone to know , not even family really. May say to close family that we've had a small win just to cover the fact I'd want to give them money straight away. Also all bank accounts etc would be held miles away from where we live !!!!!!!!
I'd like to carry on working for say up to a year just to keep my feet on the ground and get my head around the win.
Again I wouldn't move until I'd got to terms with the money.
I would however like to give money away to family and friends as soon as possible. I think I'd try to set up a 'fake' company and give people money making out they've won money, like those scam letters people get but this time they would actually have won money ! If they 'google' the company though I suppose I may come unstuck.
I would make sure that everyone I knew, who were poorly and had carers, or family members caring for them, had say £100 per week to help them along......get the lawn mowed, pay for sitters, all those little extra's that might make a difference. Again concerned how they get the money without knowing it's from me
Sorry Guide Dogs for the Blind won't be getting any. Great cause but I heard from someone who worked there that, in relation to many other charities , they had shed loads of money. I'd be giving to other small charities that took my fancy
All I need now is to pick the right Euro numbers !!!!!!0
