How would you share a mega-lottery win

"Secrets And Lies Destroy Lives" - ???
It's so hard, isn't it?
I'd want to keep a big win quiet as well but once you start spending or giving away loads of money, it's impossible.
Surely it would depend on circumstances and how you go about it?
Okay, yeah, you buy a fancy new expensive house in a plush part of town. It is difficult to explain that away... unless you were to keep your old place anyway and use it as and when necessary.
And yes, if you show up in a brand new luxury car after driving a 10 year old VW Polo around for a while it's hard to explain away.... unless you keep the 10 year old VW Polo and use it as and when necessary.
For some, it would be very difficult but for others it wouldn't be too difficult to portray everything as remaining the same. If you're used to a busy house with people coming and going then keeping up such a pretence would be too much hassle I would imagine. In my case, I don't have too many visitors and I have even less that pop by without any notice (and most of those that do I couldn't care less about) so I could get away with living somewhere else quite easily.0 -
Here's my list:
I'd buy some land (around 10 acres) and design & build a house. The house would need a decent kitchen, a swimming pool and rooms for guests. And a library. Oh, and a wine cellar.
Whilst the house was being built, I'd travel. I travel a lot anyways as it comes with the job, but I'd really travel and get to know places better.
Once the house was finished, I'd build a couple of cottages for guests. Also, I'd build kennels and some outbuildings, a vegetable patch etc.
I'd set up a combined dog rescue/ boarding kennel and I'd take courses in dog training. I'd employ people who would struggle to get a job, people who might just need that second (or even first chance) in life.
I'd donate to various charities, such as hospices and air ambulance to name a couple.
The rest of the money? I'd find a way to spend it. I'd need a housekeeper/cleaner for a start as I hate housework.
I wouldn't share with family as they don't deserve it. I have a couple of proper friends who would benefit in a discreet way, as I wouldn't want to patronise them. I wouldn't go public on purpose, and I have a friend who would show me how to invest my money.
Oh, and I'd buy a 4track vehicle, dubarry wellies and lots of pink champagne0 -
the bare bones of my list, off the top of my head:
- a house with land and workshops, probably an old farm, where I can keep and work on racing cars, and would employ a couple of people to look after them.
- buy a house in the Eifel mountains, within a couple of miles of the Nurburgring, and an annual season ticket for same.
- become a major investor in a specialist performance and race car dealership, which would enable me to borrow something interesting from stock every weekend without having to actually buy them.
- create and sponsor several engineering scholarships at somewhere like Imperial College.
- a couple of million would go to the Bloodhound SSC project, and I'd be there for test runs and the record attempt.
- travel, lots of it, as rough and adventurous as my age would allow (e.g. Kilimanjaro, Everest base camp, antarctica, cross the Atlas on a camel)
- and of course the discreet help to family and friends that others have already described.
- sponsor a race team to win at Le Mans with a Union flag on the car.
- major sums to RNLI and Air AmbulanceThe questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
Does it sound bad that I'd like to go off sick from work to sort out what I'd like to do with it?
I think I would still carry on working as not only do I love my job, but it gives me routine.
I don't even own my own home yet so that'll be the first thing I'd do. I'd also set up trust fund for my disabled nephew to ensure he has care for life.
A colleague has a relative who won over £1m on the lottery, and believed they could buy anything with it. They offered another relative 50k to leave their partner! Although they had every reason to not like that partner, it wasn't their place to get them to split, millionaires or not!0 -
I listened to a couple of programmes about lottery winners and they say Camelot come on quite strongly, telling them that they'll have masses of support from Camelot in handling the money if they go public and dire warnings that if they don't, they'll be given the cheque and sent on their way to cope alone and how they'll be at risk because they're not used to dealing with huge sums, etc.
Most people on the receiving end of a massive win are probably still in shock when Camelot puts the pressure on and give in. It suits Camelot to have the winners' pictures in the press.
Also I read once that if you don't have the publicity they hold back their free financial and legal aid how true that is I'm not sure. Most people wouldn't know where to start with all that so probably panic and agree so they keep the aidFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
Its all depends of the amount I won...
I would like a nice house, but I'd probably build or adapt one myself. I want a secret passage, and probably a underground swimming pool (with wall sconces!!). I'd like a secret room you would only know is there by counting the windows outside and seeing there is an extra one! I'd like a big garden with chickens in... and maybe bees (husband would kill me for that though).
Have you seen the Chinese lottery winners? They have to go on TV even if they wish to be anonymous, so they go in disguise!

If I won mega mega bucks, I'd buy a nice house in Wilmslow or Alderly Edge, sort my parents out with a house of their choice also build them their dream home abroad.
I would buy an apartment in New York. Couple of nice cars for me and my hubby. Probably sort my father in law with his own place same for my mother in law.
That would be it I think. I have to think how would people treat me if they won big? Would it be the same as I would treat them?

That's completely true - if you don't accept the publicity, you don't get any help from at all.
If you do agree to go public, the support is apparently very good.0 -
Money --> Bank --> Live from Interest..
People start spending the money, which reduces the interest. Why do that, why not live from the interest and you should never lose out..
The interest could pay for a mortgage etc..0 -

I don't understand this either. If I won £100m I wouldn't struggle with it at all. I actually don't understand what the issue would be.
Still, if you did find it a struggle your rich enough to just buy your own financial advice and legal aid.0
