How would you share a mega-lottery win

I wouldn't touch any of it for 1 month to let the interest kick in then I would pay of my mortgage and my & OH's debts.
I would then pay off all my mums debts along with my brothers & my grandparents.
I would then arrange for a house to be built to my specs in the Highlands somewhere with a big area for my two huskies (plus the several others I would buy) so they can have lots of space.
Like roobee I would love to run a shelter for animals
I would buy or build my mum a house too as she rents at the moment.
I would buy a small house over in Montreal Canada as it is one of my favourite cities and means I could visit my best friend and his family a lot more.
I would also give my friend in Canada a lump sum to get his film business really off the ground as I think he could really make a go of it.
We would give a few of our other friends a lump sum tooFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
Ooh I do love this topic.
You guys are soo reserved!
Ok lets say its an £80m win.
House 1
I will buy a few houses. One somewhere around the m25 - our main home, Maybe £3m. It would need a walk in closet, massive kitchen with an island in the middle bit. Playroom for the kids. Games room for the grown ups. Cinema. Huge bedrooms (think mtv cribs). I will spend about 6 months on decorating it as i fancy myself as a bit of a designer. It will also need an outhouse for my housekeeper and his/her family. I would need a chef, chauffer, nanny, housekeeper and gardener. It has to have a massive garden for the kids to run around in. I would spend about £1m on a new wardrobe for the whole family (yes its excessive but we just won the lottery dammit! :rotfl:)
House 2
More of an apartment, maybe somewhere in town for when i'm in london and a place to crash if we go out. I think i will spend about £2m on this but that would probably get me somewhere tiny in a central location.if you have a chauffeur and a house in m25 region do you need a city crash pad? I'd go for a city pad, but only of we lived further out....
House 3
This house will be in Florida - cost £500k. We will spend a lot of our time there and be there 3/4 times a year going to disney and enjoying the weather. I will also manage the property myself and rent it out when we aren't there. (this will be part of my day job along with the interior design).
I will only tell my immediate family and they would not be allowed to tell anyone. I haven't decided that they should even tell their partners (as what stops their partners telling their family and so on?). I will give my brother and sister £10m each (cos I love them). I would also put £1m each into a trust fund for my nieces and nephews.
I would insist and here is the problem. You will insist, people mustn't tell etc etc, Not realistic or fair I am afraid that my siblings and parents live at least a 20 min drive from me (no closer no further). I would buy my mum and dad a house and rent out their existing house. I would also by about 10 properties which my dad can help me manage. Total cost £10m
I want to give all my cousins about £1m each but not sure how to do it without them telling the whole world that I won the lottery.
Total spend so far is about £50m. I would put £20m in the bank/invest it and the remaining £10m will be for my good causes and charitable efforts.
We have had a situation where there have been a few properties in the family. Its frankly, quite a bit of bother. If we did that I'd want some one else to manage it. Personally, with a lot of money to spend I'd rather spend the time in hotels. Not money making, no, but does put money BACK into the economy and give wealth back to the community. It depends how much you win. A few million , buying somewhere you intend to go a lot makes since, lots and lots, hotels for me please. It just seems more socially responsible, easier....and yes, it won't make me richer, but I could live with that.0 -
I would give a mega sum to Guide Dogs for the Blind - what a wonderful job they do. Then I would establish a charity which would encourage entreupreneurship - welcome to the Dragon's Den

With cash reserves of about £90m, you'd have to give a mega sum before they even noticed it.0 -
Quick question-
If you personally won the lottery, would you feel obliged to replicate what you do for your own family for that of your partners or spouse?0 -

I wouldn't give my MIL a penny of any winnings she's owes us a fortune as it is I would just tell her, her debt to us was now clearFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -

We're married, it would me OUR win. The needs of our family are different and would met differently but to same end goal I think.0 -
I wouldn't share it. I wouldn't tell anyone about it. I'd keep it to myself.
My mum told me this story about a guy she used to know who won what was a relatively decent amount on the football pools years ago. Picture in the local paper and all that. Apparently four years after he died his family were still getting begging letters.
The thing is, as much as you might trust someone, people let stuff slip. Even if you opted for anonymity all it takes is one person to tell some blabbermouth and before you know it everyone knows you're the one who won the lottery. Stuff like that spreads like wildfire. And these days, it's not hard to track people. A little bit of effort and you can find almost anyone's personal information. I couldn't be bothered dealing with thousands of sob stories from complete strangers.
There was a programme on TV about lottery winners and the amount of begging letters and not just that but threatening letters - letters such as "Give me X, or I'll kidnap your daughter!". One couple even left the UK because they feared what would happen to their family if they stayed here. One of the Euromillions winners who wanted to carry on running their little music shop had to close it because of people coming in asking/badgering/demanding money.
So yeah, if I won, I wouldn't share it and I'd keep it a secret. I'd keep an eye out for friends and I'd perhaps do a little more when it comes to giving them gifts. I'd pass a bit of money their way in ways that weren't overt or obvious but no one would ever know.0
