Thanks everyone. Things are looking a bit better tonight thank God. The vet changed the anti emetics and Lucy was able to keep some water down afterwards. A few hours later she managed a tiny bit of food which also stayed down - so far. And she has had more water too.

The vet said to keep trying her with a couple of teaspoons of food every 2 hours but the water is the most important thing.

Lucy is still very lethargic but seems to have stopped panicking and did manage a tiny wag of her tail.

The vet said if she vomits again, or fails to take water, she will have to be readmitted. Both her front legs look sore from where the drips were yesterday - she chewed the first drip out so it had to be reinserted in the other leg and she tried to get that out too, but they will find a way around that if need be.

They also said it does look like all this may well have been caused by blue-green algae.

For now I'm just thankful there's that small improvement and she's still with me.

We'll see what tonight brings. Thank you all so much for your kindness and good wishes for Lucy. It's very much appreciated, believe me.

Lucy is a bit better this morning. She wasn't sick in the night and has had a drink of water and another two teaspoons of food.

The vet rang to ask how she was and was happy she hasn't been sick again. Apparently the blue-green algae in lakes and rivers/streams is a massive problem at the moment and, as thorsoak's link details, has caused several fatalities to dogs even swimming in them, never mind drinking from them as Lucy did.

I'll keep her cool and quiet today and offer a bit of food every couple of hours, see how she goes on.

Main thing is, she's improved. I really thought yesterday was the day I was losing her.

When I read your first post I wondered if it could have been blue-green algae. Sadly a friend of mine had her young collie die very quickly from drinking infected water about 7 years ago now so I am very wary of it now.

Hope Lucy continues to improve :)
I just enter and forget...hoping to win something! :)
  • Thank you for the update! Glad Lucy is feeling a bit better :)

Glad to read Lucy is feeling better. I know exactly how you feel - when milo first got ill I rushed him to the vet (Friday evening) and was told to take him home (with medication) and get him eating over the weekend, I tried everything possible and the only thing I could get him to take was cooled water that I had cooked some white fish in and I was syringing the water into my hand and he was licking it out of my hand. On both bouts of illness he spent approx. 6 days in the vet hospital on drips etc. During his first stay he ripped his drip feed out, so they put a muzzle on him and he chewed that off, so they then put a buster collar on him and he worked out how to get that into the top corner of the kennel to rip his drip feed out. The second stay he managed to chew around the edge of his buster collar (they still don't know how he managed to do this but he made his gums bleed - I still have a photo of the buster collar now), and then he ripped his drip feed out, so they put it into the other leg and he ripped that out too so they told me to take him home!!
