I would never "buy" a dog. When I got my first dog I hadn't really thought about what breed I wanted, my friend who came to the rescue with me was a little dog/terrier person, we enquired about puppies and they had border terrier x jack Russell puppies. I got lucky that day - I had a thorough home visit and they fully explained the breed traits ie bags of energy etc etc - I don't think they realised that 12yrs later that puppy would still have bags & bags of energy and she's my amazing old girl. Milo, he was on a dog rescue forum, this fat dumpy looking puppy - again I got lucky, £80 I paid for something that was to become my soulmate, my best friend and my reason for living day to day, he stood by my side for 10yrs and there will never be another like him. Andy Dolly - a teeny worm riddled little puppy that was very poorly when I got her, very quirky but a mummy's girl. All rescues, all crossbreeds, you take your chance, its like a lucky dip sometimes but I've been very lucky on all 3 occasions.

I would argue why do people buy dogs at all when literally thousands of perfectly healthy good natured dogs are put down every year in the UK !!

I can see your point and almost all my cats and dogs over the years have been rescues.

I have only ever had the same breed of dog and of the 14 I have had only 2 have been puppies. At present I have one rescue and one I got as a puppy almost 2 years ago. There were no dogs of the breed in rescue and as that is the only breed me and OH want we bought a puppy.

Our cute little boy is a "Chiwocker" (I spell it that way so you know how we pronounce it) .
His mum was a cocker spaniel, his dad was an ambitious chihuahua. I don't think it was a deliberate breeding experiment. when the owner of the cocker spaniel inherited her late grandmother's chihuahua, she hadn't worked out how to keep them apart at the crucial time !!
The result was 3 unusual but cute pups, and we bought 1 of them for £200.
The lady owner kept the puppies until they were 16 weeks old - a good sign, she wasn't eager to offload them before they were properly ready, and by that time her spaniel had been spayed so there couldn't be another "accident"

We went and bought a puppy because we already had a grown-up dog (her long-term companion had just died a week before, she wasn't happy being an only dog), and a 12 year-old child in the house. We didn't want to inherit the emotional/behavioural difficulties of a rescue dog, nor did we have the time to go thru the assessment process that bodies like the RSPCA now require - not decrying it in any way, but as lifelong dog owners, we know that we know how to care for our little friends.
2 years on we have two happy contented dogs who adore each other - and the 3 humans they have to put up with !!
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

I'm guessing it's to make money out of gullible people. Also, it's cheaper for dodgy breeders as they don't need certain paperwork and KC stuff (I'm guessing).

I have a rescue mongrel and I proudly call her a mongrel. She's a terrier cross, so maybe I should call her a Border Russell? ;) I don't actually know for sure what she is, but I really don't care because she's cute as a button albeit very nutty :)

We have a Labrador cross Spaniel. We're (neither are the rescue centre that he came from) not overly sure which type of spaniel he is. But the rescue centre think he's a Springer.

I just bought a maltishu. I really liked the look and traits of both dogs so I decided to get a cross. Yes it might cost as much as a pure breed but I got exactly what I wanted. I got so see mum and dad and they are both kc registered. She is the prettiest thing and in my eyes worth every penny. I also hopefully wont have to worry too much about the genetic issues, I know its no gurantee. I bought her because I loved the way she looked, why do people buy pure breeds?

Why do you think you won't have to worry about the genetic issues? What health tests did the breeder carry out on the parents?

I 'buy' (usually rescue, but money does change hands) my pure breed dogs because I'm allergic to breeds that shed hair, so I don't have a lot of choice. If I weren't allergic I'd go to the dog's home and pick a dog based on its temperament and whether it would fit in with my lifestyle and existing dogs.

    KC registration can be meaningless.

For instance, a Blenheim(red and white) cavalier, bred with a tricolour or another Blenheim, cannot produce a litter of whole colour (ie with no white) puppies, but it took years of lobbying by breed experts, together with evidence form university geneticists, to convince the KC not to allow registrations of such 'offspring' (usually by puppy farmers).

Registration is also no proof of health, unless you know of a breeder's reputation, as even those on the Accredited Breeders list are only accredited after stating that dogs have had health tests; no proof asked for . (This may possibly have changed in the last few years, but was so a while back, when people I knew had to deal with a situation.)

We have one of those, only they think a cocker spaniel because of his head shape (not convinced, he's the size of a small labrador!!), so I guess, a Spanador? Or a Labradaniel? Or maybe a Cockador!! :rotfl::rotfl:

I've seen a lot of these cross-breeds advertised for really high prices, even for older dogs. For £80-something, you can adopt a cross-breed from Dogs Trust and they'll even vaccinate, neuter and chip them.

ETA: I'm sure a saw a Shih tpoo advertised once.

Mine's a rescue, but has a definite look of collie in him. When we asked the vet what they though he might be made up of she just referred to him as a Heinz 57 and it stuck :D
