Since when did a Mongrel start getting posh names

Options
I'm just curious,

I see this more and more now. Mongrel dogs given silly combined names and being sold for silly amounts of money.....
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Mongrel dogs, in fact they are usually a better option I believe as they tend not to have the genetic problems suffered by pure bred dogs.... What I do raise an eyebrow at is the fact that people are now paying silly money for something that is essentially a mongrel..

Maybe I'm wrong here so stand to be corrected if someone can tell me what the difference is exactly ?? Best I can see is when human intervention is involved it's mixed-breed, when not, it's a mongrel.... seems a bit of a lame difference in as far as the human intervention would merely be sticking the two dogs in a pen together !! Hardly a big difference !!

Is this just a clever marketing ploy started by a dog breeder????

    It's not a mongrel, it's a hybrid apparently ;)

I'm guessing it's to make money out of gullible people. Also, it's cheaper for dodgy breeders as they don't need certain paperwork and KC stuff (I'm guessing).

I have a rescue mongrel and I proudly call her a mongrel. She's a terrier cross, so maybe I should call her a Border Russell? ;) I don't actually know for sure what she is, but I really don't care because she's cute as a button albeit very nutty :)

I would imagine some of it has to do with the associations people have with the word "mongrel".

When not referring to a dog, mongrel is used almost exclusively with negative connotations and for many people they may even be more acquainted with such negative connotations than they are with the actual meaning of the word. Similar to !!!!!, a female dog, which I'm guessing will get censored by the forum here.

So they call the dog something different so that the negative sense of the word isn't brought up and lull newer dog owners into believing the dog is something a little special.

So really it's a PC thing... nothing more !! I would agree also that it's to lull the un-educated (Sorry if that seems a bit harsh) people looking for a dog into thinking they are getting something "Special" and thus paying a fortune for it.... They would be much better going to the local pound, Dogs Trust or the likes and rescuing a dog rather than lining the pockets of these cowboy breeders (And I use that term breeder very loosely!!)
  • Ahhhhhh apparently these "Designer" dogs have to be bred from two pure breed dogs.... So "Allegedly" it is not a mongrel if the parents are both pure bred

    Some interesting names....

Kinda, yeah. I mean it's just a guess but even I as a dog person hear "mongrel" more often than not referring to something negative (quite often, racist at that). It's just one of those words where the original meaning has been twisted into something unpleasant overtime - like the aforementioned b-word which did get censored.

It might not be the only reason but I'm sure that it helps market a dog better if it's not being described as a mongrel.

    Cross-breed serves that purpose.

Labradoodle, Jack Charles, Lab Aire etc. etc., are just names used for cross-breeds intending to part fools with their money.

I wonder what will happen in 20 years time when the Mastadors mate with the Saintberdoodles. Oh, they'll be back to plain old mongrels!

The origin seems to be Labradoodles - which were actually bred for the sensible reason of trying to get a guide dog with a low allergenic coat. Unfortunately it set a ball rolling that snowballed into Cockapoos, Jugs, Pomchis and all sorts.

I have no doubt being able to stick a giant price tag on a litter of crossbreeds is the main motivation for the majority of the breeders. Some of the pups sell for more than a purebred puppy of either crossbreed ever sell for!

My sister just paid £800 for a cockapoo. Both it's parents are KC registered. There's no way I would ever pay that kind of money, but there you go.
