It's my birthday next weekl (virtual cake for all!)

I've been working since I was 16 so if I've wanted something I've always bought it so I'm now in the position where I have pretty much everything I need. (Nobody is buying me a house!)

OH hasn't got a clue what to get me. I left him to it at Christmas and you could tell he had thought about things I liked but was a bit lazy in the execution of it (I like wine, he bought me a £4 bottle of it! Wasn't asking for Bollinger but maybe something I wouldn't nip to the shop and buy after work!)

I don't want to sound materialistic and spoiled, because I'm not really.

I've asked him for something sentimental as we have been together for three years and I have never received anything like a nice piece of jewellery or something similar, but for some reason he is very reluctant (won't even go into a jewellery shop).

It's not like I'm asking for an engagement ring!

I just want him to use his head and realise that if he's spending money on me he might as well buy me something nice and long-lasting.

You are expecting quite a lot of him in your opening post.

What he thinks is a nice thing to do obviously differs from your idea of a nice thing to do :rotfl: he got you the wine he knew you liked, you wanted a better bottle.

Men aren't mind readers, just send him some links to things you'd like.

My OH is the same, he never knows what to get me and gets annoyed if I don't tell him. I always want a surprise but I never get one as I HAVE to tell him what I want or he'll run an idea by me that he's come up with by himself which is totally useless (I'm aware he's doing this on purpose). This year, I've asked him how much he wants to spend on me and I've put that amount into my account from his and I'm buying my own. Its the easiest way.

He won't even tell me how much he wants to spend so I can't really tell him what I want anyway.

I don't think that I am. I've been with him for three years (which might not be a lot to some of you) but when I've put effort into things for him that he loves (I bought him a watch for xmas because I remember him showing me an old one he used to wear) and he has worn it every day since. I suppose I would like something similar. As nice a gesture it was a bottle of wine doesn't last me for months! :)

I have a similar problem. I have a big birthday this year and told DH that I want something I want, not something I need. The look of horror on his face was priceless. I then explained I want something pretty, I think he knew what I meant.

Rather than doing a list for him, I take him round the shops to all the nice places (usually involving handbags or jewellery) and say, isn't this nice, what do you think of this etc and I can see him mentally compiling a a list of possibilities!

Do the same, pick a few different things on different price ranges, hopefully he'll get the hint!

Yes, but you're a girl :rotfl: We are a thoughtful species, a kind and gentle, loving breed.

Men, on the other hand... :rotfl::rotfl:

Only joking, but I do think that only a small percentage of men are 'romantic' - most just don't have a clue.

For my OH's 30th we were away on holiday at the time, and I pre-planned taking lots of old photos through the years of him, balloons, confetti, his present, banners etc etc.

I decorated the whole hotel room secretly for him (including blowing up balloons which I HATE ) and he was totally overwhelmed.

BUT, I won't be expecting the same for mines. :rotfl:

Cracking idea. We don't get an awful lot of time together which makes it hard to do things like this but when I get home tonight I'll whip the laptop out and point out all the websites of high street shops that sell pretty things in his price range (whatever that is, might just put some really expensive things on to try my luck haha)

Just thought of a perfect example of how mens minds work.

I LOVE lillies - and OH knows this. He has frequently surprised me over the years with bunches of lilies for the house, which is lovely.

Recently, I mentioned that I might try some different kinds of flowers in the house (as lilies are aggravating sinus problems) and I would have a look next time I was out shopping.

Whilst out shopping, OH text me. 'Buy yourself some flowers and I'll give you the money when you get in'. LOL!

Now, this isn't thoughtlessness. In his mind, he now doesn't know what kind of flowers I would like, therefore wouldn't be able to decide on his own. So, the easiest way to find out, is to get me to get them. LOL

I'm awesome at buying presents. I always leave it to the last minute and spend about 10 mins buying the presents. However people always say 'this is perfect, you must have spent ages looking for this'. Once I bought a necklace for my girlfriend and her response was 'You got me my birthstone, you put so much thought into this'. Yes, of course I did.

It's quite a useful skill to have!

Haha it is hard being the more thoughtful sex isn't it?

I will love whatever I get because I know it's hard for him to buy presents for people. He only properly started buying presents for his family when I made him do it. Before then you would be lucky if you got a card!
