There's not a great deal in it per kWp from the cheaper panels to the expensive ones...say £150 tops, maybe go for the LG's and get a higher capacity inverter, once you have DNO approval the inverter cap becomes a thing of the past as you can go to the max that your system can generate, not like a 4kWp system that's capped with a 3.68 inverter, I know(and so will Mart)
All comes down to what you want to spend, how long you plan staying in the house and more importantly how you'll go about changing your habits to make the most of the generated power in the day(might be an idea to look at monitoring)
Do you have an immersion tank?2 kWp SEbE , 2kWp SSW & 2.5kWp NWbW.....in sunny North Derbyshire17.7kWh Givenergy battery added(for the power hungry kids)0 -
I doubt I will be moving form this house for the next 10 - 15 years, no I don't have an immersion tank Im afraid.

Buy one, no buy 2!!!
With the surplus generation you'd be mad not to try and use some of it!
Do you have underfloor heating?
With the cost savings you've achieved (those prices are excellent, well done!), maybe look at a battery system?
No idea on price but this looks right up your street!

I know the UK Sales Manager, I'll ask him to drop by!4kWp, SSE, SolarEdge P300 optimisers & SE3500 Inverter, in occasionally sunny Corby, Northants.
Now with added Sunsynk 5kw hybrid ecco inverter & 15kWh Fogstar batteries. Oh Octopus Energy too.0 -
Quick update
Got solarex round and awaiting quote, he did a site visit and says I will get some shading from my chimney and was showing me 2 products that were not mainstream invertors both of which had 20 year warranties which I thought was good considering the lifetime of a standard invertor is much less.
The Guy was extremely knowledgeable, so glad I had them round tbh.
He is quoting me on a micro invertor system and another system that still uses an invertor but also has modules on each panel to get round the lowest panel bringing down the whole string..
Does anyone have experience of these systems, they do quote in the literature that you 10% more generation on a non shaded roof and this goes up more if subject to shading or complex layouts.
Cheers for all the help guys, ill keep you posted on prices I get back0 -
Solaredge power optimisers are what is proposed..0

Solaredge power optimisers are what is proposed..
Both myself and Martyn have a system which compromises of solaredge, there are quite a few others on here too but can't think off the top of my head.
All i'll say is, great piece of kit, just don't be bamboozled into paying a premium price for it, it doesn't increase the cost of a system that much, maybe £500, at least now you'll have the foresight to argue(negotiate) on the price. Each PO(power optimiser) costs around £40 but the inverter comes in around £200 cheaper than an SMA sunnyboy.
On top of all that, you also get lifetime online free monitoring of your system.
I believe the warranty for solaredge to be 12 years but am open to be corrected2 kWp SEbE , 2kWp SSW & 2.5kWp NWbW.....in sunny North Derbyshire17.7kWh Givenergy battery added(for the power hungry kids)0 -
Ok so latest quote for 19X 300W LG panels, Solaredge setup, Landis power meter, 8600 inc vat. 25 year warranty on PO's, 10 year on invertor. Can be extended to 25 for £300.
Does this seem reasonable??

.... they do quote in the literature that you 10% more generation on a non shaded roof and this goes up more if subject to shading or complex layouts ....
If it's a single plane array with no shading and a well matched panel set then you'll find little/no difference at all. The same goes if comparing to a two plane system with a twin MPPT inverter.
If you have any shading at all it needs to be looked at but take care that you're not talked into buying a system which is designed to cope with a significant shade issue if it's only going to cause a slight problem when there's a low winter sun-arc. Some decent inverters include the ability to vary the MPPT algorithm and operation in order to correct minor shading issues so that there's very little noticeable effect .... for example, have a look at the capabilities SMA's OptiTrac Global Peak system which comes as standard on a number of models in their range - if it will do the job then you will have less potential points of failure in relatively inaccessible places (ie under a panel on the roof).

Thanks everyone for the advice and giving me the confidence to go ahead and get solar.
My Qcell 250 watt silver panel (x16 for 4kW system) with enphase micro inverters was installed 2 weeks ago.
Now I just need the sun to come out again :-(0
