Totally agree, tough love is needed. I would probably lend her the money, BUT make it clear it is a loan, and if she doesn't pay it back Monday tell her YOU will be short for a bill due at the end of the month.

I would then say that this was absolutely the last time she should ask, next time the answer will be no, and ask her when she was thinking about paying your grandparents back? (I wouldn't worry about upsetting her, she was thick skinned enough to ask for money in the first place!)

There must be loads of designer gear she can Ebay, starting with that bag!

Almost 100% of this thread agree that it wouldn't be wise to lend your sister the money. You yourself know there is little chance of being paid back. Why should you be her banker? Let her stand on her own two feet! Easier said than done, I know.
It sounds like one of Martin's :money: dilemmas.

    Good luck
  • Hi there,

If you really want to help her, don't lend her the money - just tell her you don't have that kind of money spare. What's the point? Sometime soon, it's all going to come crashing down as the reality of her situation intrudes on her fantasy lifestyle.

She needs to either a) see the reality of what she earns against what she spends and adjust accordingly or b) earn more!

Going BR will not make any difference to those choices.

However, have the £200 handy, just incase you need to bail her out at the last moment...

    :)

  • Hi
Little late here but my sister is totally the same, I loaned her over £400 when I was a student, it's complicated but when she got a settlement from her old work contract she didn't even offer to repay any of the debt. I got her foolishly a duplicate credit card, but kept it and only let her have it when she said she needed food for the kids and I couldn't go with her - study/work commitments, it came back with food shopping, some shirts for her bloke, and lunch at a restuarant - she never repaid. It's difficult but in the end I can honestly stay my debt started by loaning money! I loaned my mum over £1k and my sister over time about the same then my uncle - my mum asked me to loan him due to 'he's changed and we need the car' etc. Honestly i can say I no longer lend money. Never loan more than you can afford to give it my motto - I can't afford to give so I don't lend!

Tell her to live in the handbag , if thats what she has given her rent to. Sorry, but I would not lend her any money until she can learn to pay for the roof over her head. If folks keep digging her out of the mire she will never face up to responsibility.

Just another thought, you say she's a journalist?

Suggest she write's an article about the difficulties of keeping up with her lifestyle, all friends richer blah blah, how it's ended with mountains of debt, flog it to a magazine and pay her debts!!

  • is this a rhetorical question, surely on this evidence, there is no way you would lend her the money ? She has to get a grip, you are not doing her any favours. Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he can be bored by the river bank for the rest of his days,,,,,, (something along those lines). :)
