Why should you help her out this time again if she feels its ok to blow over £500 on a bag then cry poverty then i bet she'll do it again.

Why dont you both take the bag back get a refund pay off the rent and you keep the rest for when she needs helping again next time round.

Its not really an option as she's had the bag a couple of months now... she is taking back a top she bought for £50 though.

What was she doing buying a top when she knew her rent was due?!

Apparently in London to live the life of a millionaire, you need to be a billionaire!

Well I wouldnt go that far. But I accept the fact that as a non londoner on a average salary I live in a house that would cost over 1 million pounds if it were in london, but as it isnt its only about 170kish lol. :D

You could tell her to get one of those payday loans wre they cash you a 200 quid cheque for 50quid! that way its her problem, because it is her problem! it works out at 1200% or something as its only for a few days but who cares, shes the one that wants to spend like an idiot and go bankrupt so let her as she wont listen anyway. My mate doesnt listen when i tell him that his behaviour is illogical and he will be left looking at me with everything and himself with nothing to his name in 20 years after his house gets repossessed.

Hi NZ - Unfortunately it's like retail escapism. The top probably made her forget her problems for a few minutes. Unfortunately though, reality soon kicks back in.
I don't know what to advise, as I would probably have given her the money and I know that that is not the sensible option.

Unfortunately, its true. It was a well researched piece in the guardian about Conrad Black, they guy who used to own a couple of newspaper companies. Part of his problem (and why he had to embezzle funds) was that although he's a millionaire, it's no longer enough to live well in the city. Think about it, if your property will cost you 1 million, then you need a lot more than that to get all the trappings, eat in top restaurant, go to nightclubs where drinks cost £200. London is full of the super-rich - a millionaire is nothing these days.

  • You could even do it yourself ask for a cheque off her for 250 quid and then cash it on the 1st of the month.

edit - then live somewhere else :p emigrate to the usa or NZ :D

    Hi Rog!

Yes its classic retail therapy. Been there, done that, worn the T-shirt. I just want her to learn from her mistakes, but not even the threat of court has shaken her!

I'm glad you said you'd give her the money - I'm sure more people than have admitted would do that.

    Hi,

I can relate in a way to how you feel, (having a sister sinking under her own personal debt mountain).

Initial instinct as a sibling is to protect her and make it all better, (even if that means leaving self broke to pay her bills!) so that she can be happy and move on with her life. Most people with brothers and sisters will probably fully relate to this.

However I was advised by a poster on this board not to do this, as this hurt her more long term as it will stop her having to face up to her situation and learning to cope financially.

Much as I may not have liked hearing this at the time, I have thought it through and realise that this is the best thing I could do for her long term.
