    Yes, I agree, I love cabbage - and it is very good for you. A recipe I got from the Elizabeth Spry (I think that is her name) cook book back in the late 60's is;

Cut the cabbage into segments with a section of the stalk so it keeps together. boil for 5 minutes, strain and then -

    Put in a casserole.

In a pan fry chopped onion and then add tomatoes, season. Simmer and pour over the cabbage.

Put in the oven for about half an hour.

It also works with runner or French beans, especially good with frozen beans.

Icky icky icky icky boiled cabbage.........:p

Fry very thinly sliced cabbage with thinly sliced onion instead!
  • I loooooove cabbage!!!!

Can't eat it just boiled though. Has to be boiled, then fried in a little butter and sesame seeds.;)

I buy one once a week to use for this, coleslaw, in veggie soup and bubble and squeak. Definitely a moneysaving vegetable. :D

I love it sliced finely with equal quantities of grated carrot and stir fried with mustard seeds, chili, salt, sugar corriander and lemon juice to finish. It's really tasty hot or cold.

I love it shredded finely, sauteed in olive oil. Don't over- cook it. Add some cracked pepper. Yum.

I also love Gingham Ribbon's Gallete recipe. We have it quite often. We've got about 30 cabbages  in our veggie garden growing. I'm going to have a go at Sauerkraut. Plus I will be watching this thread with interest. :D

I have a Jane Grigson recipe for finely shredded cabbage, steamed and then tossed in double cream, and then sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. It is nice!!!!

    Hi all

I have had my first bag of veg from the bag-o'veg-scheme and I am incredibly pleased with it. For £2.50 I have

    2lb of pots
    10lb of carrots
    2 medium swede
    4 large leeks
1 HUGE cauliflower (seriously I have never seen one as big as this one)
    1 very large cabbage

Every 6th bag is received free.:j

With the garden veg and salad etc this is enough for us (or at least it should be).

Of course I can only fully benefit from the fab value if I use it all. This is where the cabbage bit comes in.

I've never really been keen but I think it is because I lack imagination in the cooking dept. I have only ever boiled it and served it up with a roast (I'm a veggie except for happy organic chickens but I cook meat for OH now and then). I am not cooking many roasts in the summer and am making stirfries and salads etc.

So.... any interesting ideas for cabbage dinners please.

My memories of it are mainly tough and stringy .......... ya know.... school dinnerish (none of the school dinner ladies here would serve it like my old school... obviously)

I will probably add some to stirfries.. but it is very large:o

    Thanks all in advance
