Hi fedupnow...
I would second PenPen's suggestion of Galette au chou, made it last weekend for the first time and it was delicious.
I would also suggest that you could make coleslaw with some of the white parts of the cabbage and some of the carrots you also got in the bag; cabbage is also lovely sliced or grated and stir fried in a little butter or olive oil (or a mixture) and some caraway or cumin seed and whatever herbs you have; steam lightly and serve with some white sauce to which a couple of chopped onions have been added, sprinkle with nutmeg, finally; my OH's family always sprinkle vinegar on their cabbage, which makes a nice change.
Good luck....think that bag was tremendous value

quote: 2lb of pots
10lb of carrots
2 medium swede
4 large leeks
1 HUGE cauliflower (seriously I have never seen one as big as this one)
1 very large cabbage
should that be 10 lb potatoes and 2 lb of carrots? That's an awful lot of carrots to get through.
........but it sounds like really good vfm - make sure that you don't do what I did when I got my veg box.
I quite forgot that I could blanche and freeze most of it, and let so much stuff go off that I had to throw things out -. As you can tell I was not best pleased with myself - but have since learned  .0 -
My sister also benefits from the bag of veg/fruit scheme. She lives in South Wales (Bridgend area) and gets a similar lot of fruit and veg I think its once a week/fortnight for about £2.50-£3 ish.
There's a link to similar thing here - its an incentive to try to get people eating more healthily.

It may just be a Welsh initiative (us Taffys are very good at some things, but not many!) as I've never heard of it in my area.
Anyway, she says that the quality of the fruit/veg she gets is excellent and great value for what you actually get - much better than supermarkets.

My favourite way with cabbage is to shred it up quite small, and start sauteing it in a bit of butter or olive oil, then after a few minutes add a splash of water (not a lot) and put the lid on for 5 minutes or until it's tender but crisp and the water has evaporated. That way you don't have to add loads of fat to it, and it's tender but not soggy. Cabbage is lovely cooked with a little lemon zest or white wine, or chopped bacon/lardons.2015 comp wins - £370.25

liz545.......... this sounded so yummy and different to what I would normally do I gave it a go straight away......... the house smells pretty bad right now:o .. I am going to have to go and search for a 'how to clean a burnt pan' thread.
Lots more left though.
Gallette au chou for tea tomorrow!!! I intend to use some chicken marinated in a smoked paprika sauce instead of the bacon..... do you think that will work OK?
We'll eat it whatever........ at least OH will......he is my very own personal dustbin:p
The bag-'o-veg scheme is backed by the Welsh Assembly
http://new.wales.gov.uk/topics/health/ocmo/cmo-news/food-co-ops?lang=en
It is primarilly aimed at encouraging healthy eating in areas where the surveys suggests that few people get their five a day. (we all know that surveys tell us all we need to know about everything and everybody... the whole truth and nothing but etc:rolleyes: , persona;y I think they spotted a council estate and went for it). Anybody can take advantage of it....... regardless of income etc. Perhaps it needs a thread of it's own in the Welsh bit??? I've only had a brief look at the link (I have only just found it having come here and read the query) but I can't find a list of where they are...... I discovered the one I go to because I saw a sign in a pub:p .
And excuse me rachelmk........ are you forgetting our mighty men in red!!!! Wales happen to have the best rugby team in the northern hemisphere I'll remind you. What more can one possibly want???;)
Thanks for the link pinkwinged I am going to check it out now.
Don't forget my thanks button won't thank ... but I am really, really thankful. Should anybody know how to make my thanks button thank please do share.
Off to shut the windows now the smell has cleared a little.:o0 -
Oh crikey - sorry you burned the cabbage! It is normally very lovely cooked this way, guess your cooker's just more powerful than mine? Hang in there though, as you say it's a big cabbage, so a little trial and error can't hurt!2015 comp wins - £370.25
