I've had this before and downed cutlery, pushed the plate away and ordered another version of my own meal and left the other one on the table for the other person to eat. I then made them pay for it. It sat there uneaten and cold and the other person was indeed ashamed and never did it again. And I feel no remorse over this.
I order what I want and if I have extra [which I usually do] THEN you can have some. Until that point - hands off.
My OH and myself often fancy more than one meal on a menu and so we order one of each, and share the plates having half of each - it works well with someone you regularly share spit with and if it's pre-agreed.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -
Oh I hate it when someone does that. I'm on insulin at the moment and so my meals are carefully planned around that, and it really annoys me when even the kids walk up and try to pick from my plate.
If I offer it to you, then please do take some, but otherwise naff off and leave me to eat. I had to stab myself with a needle to be able to eat this and would like to enjoy my meal in peace!!! LOLMake £10 a day challenges - 2014 Jul-Dec - £1911!!!

I think there are a surprising amount of food thieves causing annoyance to their dining companions. Perhaps the only way to counter such rudeness is to meet it head on with a strong rebuttal leaving the perpetrators in no doubt of our feelings.
I guess if you weren't raised properly, or choose to ignore good manners, it shouldn't be up to the rest of us to tip-toe around your sensibilities. After all, anyone who manages to break a food thief of this unappealing habit for good is performing a service to anyone else they'd dine with in the future.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

A family friend does this often.
She sometimes comes shopping with me, my mum and my son and we always eat at the supermarket cafe. My mum often orders fish and chips, but she doesn't eat the batter.
Knowing the family friend does eat it, she used to put it on the friends plate for her to eat. No problem, everyone's happy.
However, it appears my three year old son also likes batter, so my mum started sharing the batter between them, this worked well for a couple of weeks. But one time my son happened to get more than her.
Now, the second my mum cuts into the fish and starts seperating her hands are there taking it from the plate, to ensure she gets the most, whilst my three year old sits waiting patiently to see if there's any left.
Now this friend is a lovely lovely person, with a heart of gold who would give you anything, except food. When it comes to food she has no manners and it entirely pig-like. Awful, but there's no better way to describe her behaviour.Mummy to ds 29/12/06 dd 10/2/08 ds 25/5/11:Amy angel born too soon 18/11/12, always with me Emmie Faith:A15 projects in 2015 10/15completed0 -

There is also a scene in Rules of Engagement where Jeff gets upset with a food stealer, makes me laugh, even Hubby knows I don't share food though I am better at sharing now I have children. I still have to offer though!Stay at home Mum to DS Oct 2011 and DD Dec 2013

:rotfl: This thread reminds me of one of OH's friends who was complaining about being dumped by his girlfriend of two months, one of her (many) reasons was that that he stole chips off her takeaway plate. His excuse being he paid for it so they were technically his!
He's still single... (just sayin')0 -
As a rule we in this house do not steal off plates, the only exception is when eating somewhere new then we all order a different meal and we all have a bit off each plate. However this is before we actually start eating. Same if someone orders maybe a cocktail, we all have a sip with our own straw.
I rarely steal chips of OHs plate but it has been known. And

Work colleague & her DH had taken MIL out for lunch. Order was placed & waitress asked if they wanted a basket of chips.....MIL leaned over to next table (of strangers) & picked a chip up from a plate to check if they were crispy enough :eek:
