This was also covered in Gavin and Stacey - and rude people who order takeaway on the basis that when it arrives it's a free for all. No, I've ordered the only thing I like and just enough for me. I don't want what you've ordered .... so hands off mine.

Smithy went into the straight forward explanation of how if people want something they have to order it themselves and not tuck into his. His order, his food. Watch that snippet here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssv-jSSoI7I

We had lunch out today, my mum didn't order as she had a large breakfast. I knew she would want something so I ordered for me and my children, and asked for a spare plate. There was a spare sausage, bread roll and salad (I knew she would want some!) so gave her the spare plate with those. Then she pinched a chip off my plate! So I said, I won't eat all these, shall we split them? She said no. Then pinched another 2 while I was eating! In the end I just put a scoop full on her plate, despite her protests that she didn't want any. She ate them lol. I don't mind sharing (my kids are 3 and 5 so a lot of food swapping happens) but I didn't want hands creeping across while I was actually eating! Yuck!

I have been guilty of stealing the odd chip but unless DH and I agree to share a meal/course then I would find it really strange if anyone took food from my plate. When there's a crowd of us for take away Chinese we generally put everything in the middle of the table and help ourselves but that's by agreement.

I think OP's 'friend' has very bad manners.

Reminds me of a course I went on for work a few years back, one of the rare occasions when lunch was provided. I had ordered a vegan option and maybe the chef enjoyed the change as I was given a lovely selection of nibbles, dips, slices of fresh fruit etc. I am a notoriously slow eater and like to enjoy my food - I had no chance of getting to the fruit as everyone else was digging in to my lunch because 'it looks so nice' without a thought that I wouldn't be sampling theirs to make up the difference!

This happens to me all the time! I am a very slow/small eater so people always say, oh it looks like you aren't going to finish that and pinch some. It drives me nuts! I really hate it if it is pizza/ pasta or something that reheats well and I was looking forward to having the leftovers for lunch.

Having said that my DH always gets mad at me or ordering the healthy option and then stealing a few chips off his plate:o

How rude of them. I would pretend to sneeze on it as soon as it arrives. That would stop them.

Grrr I feel your pain. The worst is the 'oh, i'll just have the salad' smirking as I order chips and then steal half!!! Just order some bl***y chips if you want them! Its different if you've clearly finnished and left food, really irritates me if your still eating!

I used to work with a girl, she was just lovely. I earned the same minimum wage as her, paid a mortage, car, food etc. Most often I would buy my lunch. She lived at home and spent her money on clothes & drink. Fine. However, she would wait until I bought my lunch, I would ask if she want me to get her anything, with a reply of "£3 is far too much to spend on lunch, no thanks" then take some of mine!!! It was very furstrating. Especially because I wasn't exactly rolling in it, just apprciate a freshly made lunch.

I remember reading an anecdote about this in Isaac Asimov's autobiography a long time ago. If I remember correctly, a publisher who was trying to lure him away invited him to lunch in a restaurant. The publisher's wife was an annoying non-stop talker and just took food from Asimov's plate. The publisher lost what would have been a big client because of that.

I have never done that nor has anyone done it to me, but it seems very bad manners indeed.
