Sheer Cover

  • You should definitely apply to a dry face - you'll have to figure out how to plan your routine so there's a big gap between cream-slapping-on and powder-buffing-on.

The very word 'routine' in the sense of 'methodicalness' is foreign to me, so the best of luck.

I have been reading all the threads about mineral make-up and I am very interested in trying it. At the moment, I use a liquid foundation followed by pressed powder, and I don't really like the feel of it, my skin feels "clogged" up.

One thing I don't understand about mineral make up though - it's just powder right? I can't help thinking if I applied a powder straight onto my bare skin, it would just look, well, powdery and caked  Does it really go on smoothly?

Also I have combination skin with open pores - is a mineral foundation suitable for this skin type?

"Ordinary" powder is made from talc, flour and suchlike. Mineral foundation powder is made from very finely crushed minerals with nothing else (though be careful, some of the brands that are cashing in on popularity do add extras - Laura Mercier do, and L'Oreal, for example).

Different brands combine different minerals in different proportions, and the finish therefore varies, but it should never look powdery and your skin should not look "made up" hardly at all.

PORES - Stay clear of Bare Escentuals unless you are willing to invest in a "finishing powder" they call Mineral Veil (which contains cornflour [they call it 'cornstarch'] so it's not pure minerals - it's a veil for minerals, not a veil of minerals), which reduces the appearance of pores. BE has bismuth oxychloride in it which gives it its sheen. The foundation is spectacularly wonderful on some areas of the face but pores show up like mad and any fine, saggy skin under the eyes looks terrible.

I personally wouldn't buy Sheer Cover because of the commitment and being disorganised so probably forgetting to cancel repeats. There are a lot of good sellers on eBay, including America, just check out their ingredients and their feedback. Get pots if possible, because sample 'baggies' (as they are called) are a nuisance to use.

For heaven's sake just go for it and see how you get on. I don't mind at all if anyone wants to PM me for specifics. I'm sure most questions have already been answered in this very thread.

ALWAYS ALLOW MOISTURISER TO DRY IN THOROUGHLY BEFORE APPLYING MINERAL FOUNDATION. AND GET A GOOD BRUSH.

Thanks for all the advice veronarona, I am going to get some sample pots and give it a go!
  • I should say, re the brands that contain other ingredients besides minerals... it doesn't mean to say they don't give fantastic results, it just means they do contain stuff that may 'nourish' bacteria, which pure minerals do not as they are totally inert - that's why they say "so pure you can sleep in it". Once you put on finishing powders or other products containing these other ingredients, you lose that bonus.

    That's as I understand it!

I've seen the Sheer cover adverts - and thought, yeah right....

After reading through this thread - I am so eager to try it or Lily Lolo or Southern Magnolia - but how good is the coverage?

Firstly, I'm in my fifties now. Secondly, I've have alot of thread veins and red blotches - look like a heavy drinker when not have make up on! Thirdly, seem to be prone to spots in the Winter! Great...

If anything can cover it all.... to me it would be nothing short of a miracle! I've got foundations that cover but looks yukky - and seem to make my skin worse and itchy!! And have no idea why I've gone all 'italic' - what did I hit?? :D

Funnily enough I was just doing a bit more research on eBay and the www, and I discovered that Sheer Cover lists bismuth in its ingredients and it also contains Rooibos (South African Red Bush tea) for antioxidant powers. That means it's not purely minerals.

Jeannie, have you looked at the tutorial I put a link to in this thread? That girl puts more powder on her brush than I would do, but then I'm older (even older than you) and have to be more subtle :p BUT continue...

    1. Buy samples from Lily Lolo (http://www.lilylolo.co.uk/lily-product1.php?cat=1). I've just ordered 2 sample foundations, under £4 delivered, pay with PayPal or you can use cards.
    2. Follow method in the above tutorial BUT use very, very little on the brush, swirl well and tap-tap-tap to get excess off before smoothing on willy-nilly (you don't even need a mirror to put it on, you can't make a mistake!) and buffing a bit (not so necessary with mineral brands other than Bare Escentuals).
    3. Don't look at yourself for 10 minutes at least.
    4. Look in mirror, decide if sufficient coverage, if not, put on another fine layer.
    5. Repeat steps 2, 3 & 4 as many times as you like!

I cannot find you the excellent kabuki brush that I would recommend, so buy a cheapo for starters and then invest in a really good one later.

Different brands give differing finishes, you need to find one to suit you and you'll only bother to do that if you have 'difficult' skin - nearly all of them give fantastic coverage, some people use concealer too but just put your toe in the water with foundation.

As long as you're not sensitive to a particular ingredient (like bismuth), and as long as you don't pierce your skin with a bad brush, you should find that minerals actually calm your skin - I think it's the zinc. I have rosacea and breakouts, it's good for my skin.

I can't say any more, I'm exhausted, it's so stressful recommending things when you know everyone's different and some people will take offence if you don't get it exactly right for them.

    Veronarona,

Thank you - from what you describe, we have similar skin...!

Funnily enough, I took the chance and ordered some sample pots from Lily Lolo this afternoon, together with a kabuki brush - don't know if it will be a good one or not!

I'll probably, if I receive it, try it next weekend as I'm rushing like a looney in the mornings for work. I know that ordinary foundation is aggravating my skin and making it worse. And I have to put something on - it doesn't cover it all but it looks less awful, if that's possible. Do you find you have to 'top' it up during the day? I don't normally take make up to work with me!

I really appreciate your help, advice and honesty.

    :D
