We had a furry friend take up residence in our kitchen a couple of years ago. Rang the rat catcher (or whatever they're called). We were expecting him to put down poisons but he turned up with some rather medieval looking devices, which he strategically placed with some peanut butter as bait. It can't have been five minutes since he walked out of the house that the trap went off, called him back, and it was all done that afternoon :)

He should have used Nutella. It would have been three minutes, lol

We have astounding and rather disgusting catch rate with Nutella.

    1) My business cards have arrived. Never had any before - so it feels quite strange.

Always start the week with a dozen in whatever you take to a meeting.

    Don't you take baked goods?

Imagining those with cards in is making me giggle.

Rat lady should have told you what was in the box, I.e. Chemical or trp, and which poison she used, presuming poison. This is so that if you decide to supplement you use the same poison this year And a different one next year.

there's some paperwork and a tick box of what it is. Bromadiolone - and a note to take to the Doctor/vet if somebody's eaten it :) "... an indirect anticoagulant; Vitamin K1 (phytoneradione) is antidotal."

How does this work? If there are say a dozen rats under or near the shed, you can't hope to trap or poison them all. Is it enough just to kill a few, and the rest get the hint? Maybe they realise that it's an unhealthy area for them and simply move on?

She mentioned "20".... box doesn't look big enough though.

    Trap no poison yes.

The 30 fee usually covers up to four visits, by visit three there will be, in normal circus, no or few takers if the rat lady has evaluated and dosed correctly. If she they are still tAking like fiends on visit four then if I were PN I would be raising and issue to say it were a community issue and further action ( not at her cost) should be taken) . At the end of the visits on will be advised how to proceed at her costs, including probably buying a poison box or two, and alternating poisons, but this should be stated more than once, beginning and end. Its hugely important issue in vermin control.

Three visits here. I just hope it fixes it ... forever.

No. It doesn't fix it forever. It fixes it for now and you know now what has been used to treat rats this year in your area. Now you can buy your own box ( or I can get you one for my farm shop if you want) and see what poison we have, for next year, you can probably take some of ours if we have suitable in.

Then you can keep an eye on it yourself, in a relaxed way, from now on so it never reaches that situation again.

If you want me to get you a box leg me know. We use lock boxes with block bait and tubes with pour bait in different places. What did she use there?

While I was typing this Rapnoc strolled out of another back door of the house casually and sauntered off. So, he is roaming all through the house, not just in my bathroom and landing, so I'm right, I have smelled him else where. Harumph. :(

I know this sounds lame - but I am not the sort of person with enough backbone to be dealing with boxes myself.... I don't mind lobbing slugs of poison randomly round the shed/base - the sort where they allegedly carry it off to their nest and die .... but I am not a box sort of person.

Here I've got a black plastic box about the size of a 6 pack of Coke .... it's got a small hole in one end... didn't see it, haven't been near it - just peered, nervously, at it from a distance....
