On my father's side. my grandfather's brother died aged 21 - and the family paid for a holy water stoop for the entrance of the local church. He died of blood poisoning. Here he is [/B]

PN, His name liveth forever more.

A truly lovely gesture, to find him and post his picture.

We listened to poems by Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen, heard a Gospel reading, heard the roll of honour of the names on the gate..some of the names still belonging to their descendents who are village residents. Two minutes silence, The Lords prayer and then the National Anthem.

The main speaking parts taken by two men in their eighties.
There was quite a few people who turned out. Of our row of six cottages, three couples were there.

Now listening to Lark Ascending from Westminster Abbey.

Dh's employers are introducing a free ( taxable benefit) care thing, for when normal care provision for dependant adults ( that would be me) falls through.

Any one know if he can be denied taking time off for hospital appointments with me and a carer sent instead if needed? We both feel HE is needed at many of the appointments.
He doesn't have an automatic right to time off to be with you, as you're an adult. However, he needs to check his contract, as he may be allowed to nominate a person with a specified illness/disability which will improve his chances of time off.

If it is a taxable benefit, he must have the right to decline to sign up to it, I would have thought.

I would think that time off for hospital appointments is something different altogether. Normal care provision is looking after people, generally in their home, so attending to their needs or ensuring they are not left alone. I wouldn't have thought it would extend to hospital appointments.
It'll come back to the "reasonableness" argument again (depending on the contract). Gradually time off for dependents has crept into employment law. Initially it was just children under 5, that then increased to under 13, & ISTR that being extended to include adult dependents (I'm not 100% when that came in, or even if it has yet off the top of my head).
Unless the contract states otherwise, time off is unpaid.

LIR, pm me tomorrow daytinme to remind me, & I can have a look at my info at work.

    Are NP marking WW1 today?

Tonight we are lighting a candle in a lantern and hanging it outside the front of the house to mark the centenary of WW1. All other lights will be off.

At 10.00pm there is a small ceremony at the Lychgate of our local church which is also our war memorial. OH and I will go.

I have no direct family connections however we have the medals of my husbands grandfather, a driver of horses in battle, and a brass box of his which once held a wartime chocolate gift.
Lights off here too. Seems to be quite popular. Just the chavs across the street haven't bothered.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Beware! I was thinking of ordering one to replace our Bosch oven which seems to be falling to bits after 10 years. This one is pyrolitic and draws 16 amps. Our current oven is less than 13 amps, and just plugs into a ring main. So, if we got this one, we'd have to do a major re-wiring job.

That would have been great, but I've got a freestanding cooker atm :( (must NOT buy that oven ready for doing up the kitchen sometime in the next millennium). Still not sue whether to get a mini oven or another cooker. If the was a deal like that though, the decision would be made!

Lights off here. ( RP went to bed). When its me its almost always lights off or one light or lamp. Unlike pn I love candles, dogs and I had candle lit evening, but it didn't feel that different.

This is a give-and-take thing, isn't it? FIR can't work effectively in the office if he knows he really ought to be with LIR. Any sensible employer knows that and makes some allowances.

That's one side of the equation. The other side is the amount of allowances FIR can reasonably ask the employer to make. He's a pretty special chap, with great skills, so I'm sure they'll do their best.

One practical solution to this is perhaps for FIR to be listening in and participating on a mobile phone throughout some of the less important consultations, rather than being present in person. If that requires somebody else to take LIR to the doctor, then this insurance would be perfect to cover that cost.

From a common sense point of view there is little point in denying someone permission to do this as all that will happen is that they will phone in sick next time. I'd rather my staff made up the time or took annual leave as appropriate really and I assume that any sensible employer would do the same...

And I'm sure SC is right - he must be able to refuse the benefit. Plenty of people from my office turn down the free private health insurance because it comes with a significant tax liability attached.
