Bloke on the telly programme (that I wasn't really watching) said something about cutting the bottom 1/3rd off tomato foliage to let the light get in.

I don't think the light was the problem (one of the blossom-end rotted tomatoes was going red). I think its that the water is shared by the leaves and the fruits. Too many leaves = not enough water to fruits.

    That's my guess anyway.

Oh, might be just getting out most of your laterals would have made a difference. Like dead heading, nice job to do am or pm, glass of wine or cup of coffee ( or drink of choice ) in hand. Pleasure not chore.

    Not like, bleuuuuur, Weeding. :(.

    Or bleuuuur, housework

I'm fed up of dead heading. Drink or no drink every time I look at my begonias, marguerites or fucshia (none of which were bought by me - that was my mum) they seem to need dead heading. They are very pretty though. Esp the begonias, that IMO look like rasperry ripple :)

It is lovely hearing about your vegetable selections.

I had an eBay buying spree. Bought an entire wing mirror unit for the car I've borrowed (a Citroen C1 for those wondering how I'd fit my family in something smaller than a MINI!)

Just picked up a lovely bike for DD - she's presently whizzing around the park. I can't keep up, so there's little point trying. Her skirt is sequinned, so she flints as she goes around. I'm having a sit down with Paulo Nutini :)

We had all you can eat sushi for tea. DD's choice.

I love yellow beans, I find them a little more buttery. I've usually grown them on dwarf plants so it might be worth going back if it's not too far :).

Blossom end rot is usually linked to watering - swinging too often between dry and wet compost.

Removing leaves doesn't make a difference to BER, though does help tomatoes ripen as long as you leave enough on the plant to keep it photosynthesising. I really need to get some of my tomato leaves off my plants - can't see anything for leaves!

King Edwards are a late maincrop so probably not quite ready yet. If you do see signs of blight, chop the foliage off and don't harvest for 2 weeks to allow spores to die off.

Sounds as though you're doing really well and that meal sounds lovely :T

If it weren't digital only she wouldn't need a freeview box, no?

No, but I don't know the technical explanation. All I know is that at some point we had to buy the boxes for our old TVs. I think they were analogue conversion boxes, but I'm nervous of saying that on a thread where scientists hang out.

Telly was OK for a few hours .... now it's gone all choppy again and it keeps retuning itself.

I think your digi box is faulty, why does it retune itself randomly?

I am totally confused by train fares.

DS2 needs to get somewhere tomorrow at peak time. So he needs a tube ticket into London and train ticket out. To add a tube ticket to the train ticket is only possible if you add a peak time travelcard, that is more expensive than paying for each journey.

So it appears he needs a train ticket for the BR part and tube tickets for the tube bit. For some stupid reason that works out more expensive than catching the train from my station.

Plus of course we have no oyster cards in the house. Sighs!

We had a decree nisi but no decree absolute. According to the law, we were still married. Various organisations tried to tell me I couldn't claim things as a widow because I wasn't properly widowed (eg the DWP). I just set my divorce solicitor onto them and he pretty quickly sorted them out for me. :D
Recall having a fair few big cases similar to this between 2000-2004. Men were refused widows benefits, as they were widowers, not widows. DWP argued therefore they didn't qualify.
First case I came across, I couldn't believe how blatant a sex disc case it was.
DWP didn't care, & only compromised a day before the cases got to the ECHR.

    I think yowm right.

On a related theme, I heard today that "yowm" is a word. I think it's hebrew. Can any jewish NPs confirm?

(yowm is how people refer to one another here...:D )

I pruned excess branches from my toms the other day, & I swear they have grown up to 6 inches since!

Not pruning won't be causing the blossom end rot. It's just one of those things that happens.
I don't do much pruning of tomato plants. When the fruit starts setting, i take off excess branches to ensure more nutrients go to the fruits, but that's it.

I am looking forward to getting the veg patch sorted across autumn, then using it next year. However, it is near the pond, & I'm going to need serious snail defences, as they've ravaged my lettuce this year!
