I have started painting the summerhouse. A days job has become 3 days, so far...
However I've also cleared a huge compost heap from round the shed. It was damaging the shed (damp) & if I can rescue the shed (it's a serious shed - it has a vice & everything!) then that'll be handy.
I'm also stripping/sanding & then varnishing 2 chairs the previous incumbents left behind, for use in the library.
In clearing the big compost heap I found a wood burner, and also a massive set of roots from a fir tree. Too much hassle to chop up, so had a bit of a fire today, as it was so still. That's the benefits of no neighbours I guess. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
I think I posted about it at the time.
One of our chooks died, and it's mate was very sick so i took it to the vet.
The vet diagnosed a possible outbreak of Newcastle Disease - highly contagious. Chook PTS and sent to Porton Down. I was asked to return home and await a Defra official. Defra officiall arrived, donned a full white biohazard outfit and presented us with prohibition notice not permitting us to leave the premises.
Next steps , all poultry movements within three miles would be banned, our little flock culled and big yellow bio hazard signs would be hung on our gate.
I was stunned. I was dressed in jeans and slippers whilst someone dressed for a sci fi fancy dress party was telling us we could not leave our home nor have visitors. We would need wellies and disinfectant dips at all exits (it is a semi detached cottage), the public foot path would be closed.
Next morning...all clear. Phew
I used to teach day release students from a lab (not Porton Down) that did most of the work on animal infections. They all knew a heck of a lot more than me about these diseases. The one that scared them most was anthrax, but animal diseases are a lot more common and dangerous than most people generally believe and new (or locally new) ones seem to pop up with depressing ease and frequency.vivatifosi wrote: »https://www.coursera.org/course/epidemics

That's a good link. Thanks viva. It's the first time I've taught the course so I'm keen to refresh my knowledge of it.There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

It's nice having one... but it's annoying when it's in the wrong place.0
