The Black Death was a big 'un, then. We're far less socially equipped to deal with anything of that magnitude than we were then.

In many ways, modern society in this country is far more precarious than in medieval times. Population then was 2-3 million. Now it is nearly 70 m. The country could grow enough food then to feed the population. Now we cannot. If things got really bad, food would not reach the cities, and hungry mobs would roam the country. I imagine the population could very quickly and very drastically reduce in those circumstances.

I've been out for an afternoon/ evening in the NP Hertland (St. A). Nothing too raucous. And lots of sitting down as it was hot, hot, hot and we were both tired, tired, tired.

Did you see DDs and Spanish student who were wandering around town?

And yes it did feel hot.
    I think....

In almost every way, life is much more precarious. It's far more complicated, and specalised, so that it takes millions of people working together to keep everything running, instead of a few tens for the crucial stuff.

Not sure I entirely agree with that.
    .

Not sure what you're disagreeing with? I didn't say that having a bug-out kit isn't a good idea.

Just that with enough money the chance of ever actually needing a bug-out kit is close to none, because there's very little that you can't buy with enough money. Including passports and citizenship if you have to.

The scenarios where money doesn't matter are also the scenarios where you're very likely to end up dead anyway whatever you do...

It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.
