In this country, during the last really big epidemic, they painted a Red Cross on your door, and you weren't allowed out. It seemed to work, as half the population survived. We could do better now, as our understanding of contagion is better.

The advantage our forbears had was that the incubation period for the plague was only 4 days or so, compared to 15 for Ebola.

Can you imagine trying to tell people today that they aren't allowed out? They'd have the screaming ab-dabs about rights and call the papers ... *cue indignant pose outside house for the photographer*.

That's what emergency powers are for.

The press would be censored and the military deployed to keep order and ensure compliance.

The 'screaming ab-dabs' might be a tad less effective when staring down the barrel of a gun....;)

.... although maybe it means they went down a notch or three.

Perhaps it went up a notch or two when the old occupants moved out;).

I remember the prepping thread. I'd be the one inside the house shouting "no, I don't want to come out" while eating Dopester's dog and licking the morning condensation off the car windows to hydrate.

What they forget on prepping threads is other ferals trying to get in to get their stash/whatever .... and a lack of basic services like electricity, running water, phone, TV etc as the systems no longer work as the people who run/fix them aren't at work either.

Most countries have got pretty draconian legislation tucked away for what they can do to you if you might spread something contagious and potentially fatal.

On a lighter note, there was a TV series in the 70s called Survivors which was remade very much better in the last decade about a flu that killed off the bulk of the British population and about the people that banded together to try to survive it. Supermarket supply depots became the new palaces.
