A bike lock might do the same thing.

    But you need bigger gaps.

You can get alarmed wire gate locks ( presume they are the same as bike locks actually) they aren't bad, but the ends have to fit through a tiny crack in the fence!)

    Does the latch meet ok?

Big garden bolts tend to have quite a bit of play.

    New first world problem ....

Today's the day the phone gets turned on ... so I thought I'd plug it in. There's a socket on the wall, so I shoved the connection in and something didn't "feel right".... so I looked. It looks like either there's nothing behind the wall plate, or whatever's there's fallen/slipped.

On much closer inspection, the actual socket appears bigger than a regular BT socket by about 10-15%.

Now wondering if it is a BT socket... or what.... and, if not, do I have one.... and/or how do I get one. Or, as it's a turn on the service day will an engineer appear by magic to fit one...?

And, of course, if an engineer's likely to randomly turn up .... I should put a bra/trousers on.

    It's endless isn't it!

    :)

Edit: Had a bath, got fully dressed..... "in case". Of course I now need to hang about all day here (had other plans) .... waiting to see what happens with the phone/line/broadband situation.

Latch is fine on both. It just that the top's leaning one way and the bottom's leaning the other way, on both gates.... so the top/bottom don't line up to receive bolts.

Surprised that dysons appear to be getting bad press here. Have been told they're the ultimate vacuum?

My Dyson (prob approx 12 years old) is fab, but has been worked hard and is now aging. From what I am reading online, the newer ones are not as good as the older ones.

A single bolt half way up, level with the latch??

I think the positioning of your front fence is a bit odd, PN. If that were my house I'd want to have that whole fence moved back to behind the front door. Then anybody who needed to get to the front door (posties etc) could do so without having access to the garden and back of the house.

My house and garden are a bit of an odd layout because of being a corner plot, but the drive and up to the front door are accessible to anyone, but then there's a fence and lockable gate right by the front door cutting off access to the garden etc.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Can't reach that when leaving to bolt it.... although it'd work when I'm here. I want bolts bottom/top for security and to stop them flapping in the wind. If I am going out I'd like to key lock it from the centre - and if I'm popping out, or expecting somebody, then I can just use the top bolt on the basis it can be reached/undone from the other side.

To do that would mean losing a lot of the garden ... I'd prefer to move the fence forward, a few inches back from the line of the front of the house, so nobody can "go up the side and lurk" ... and use a postbox to receive mail. With unlimited funds I'd put an old fashioned red postbox entombed within a brick pillar :) I'll get a £20-30 box fixed to the fence in reality.

Of course, a full on built porch would be better, bringing it forward so it's a big porch covering from front of building to the door. But that's not a "today" job.

I think once people have been able to undo a gate and wander in .... if they don't get a response they're likely to start peering in windows/out the back to see if anybody's about (e.g. double glazing salesmen, people with deliveries for neighbours, Jehovah's witnesses....) People are just rude and I want my garden to remain private if I'm lying on the sun lounger, sweaty, having a cig, not even brushed my hair .... etc etc.

Yes that would definitely be the best long term solution.

It all needs thinking about, and full PP. Starting from the front and following that wall along there's: gas meter, outside tap, front door, electricity meter. A drain runs along, which would dictate where a wall would go .... so it all ends up at about 4' wide and about 10' long - and bring its own small other issues over meter access and moving the outside tap (or not).

    It's a 2016 job I think.

PN - could you attach the posbox to the fence?

Definitely don't want any prowlers disturbing your sun lounging!

Yes, I was going to put it on the fence or the gate, whichever seemed best once it's been bought and arrived and there's a man to fit it .... then you get hit with all the varieties :)

Bikes... now there's another first world problem. Got the bike out of the shed to pump up the tyres. This needs two separate tubes to fit onto the pump as one tyre had a puncture on the Camel Trail and when it was fixed the inner tube had a different valve size/type.

So, pumped the rear one up - probably not "good enough". Tried to pump up the front but got nowhere. I've got another/different type of pump, so got that out and pumped up the front. So it takes two different pumps to pump up the two tyres. Gave it a "ride around in a circle" in the garden .... I think I've skimped on the tyre pumping... needs more.

Edit: Just took a look at the bike, front seems to have held, rear's gone down and the little metal bit's gone through (and popped) the top of the dust cap. Looks like it needs pushing to the bike shop then. At least that's just 200 yards away. So that's on the list :)

It's soooooo hot here.... a SCORCHER, again.
