Pastures it sounds as though it wasn't just the postman using that shortcut, but probably neighbours too, particularly if it saves them a metre or so after a night out. Bolt sounds like a good idea, providing postie can still get to your letterbox. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Zag, have been speaking to DH this morning about Monty Python and the moments of genius. Won't say too much more as I don't want to spoil it for you, but I know what you've posted here before and will leave you with two words.

... that would do my head in PN, so get those locks asap please.
There is a front gate and a back gate. Both just with a latch. The front door is accessible only after passing through the front gate.
So, to put bolts/locks on I also need to get/fitted a safe/secure postal box for the postie. Only once I have that can I lock the gates.
So I need to research/find/order/get a postal box that's fit for purpose. Then (without knowing anybody) find a good tradesman who can cut a hole in the gate and fit the postbox.... and sort out the warped wood adjoined to the house, to then fit top/bottom bolts ... and also to fit a "key operated lock/handle" in the middle of both gates.
If it were just "buy/fit one bolt" I'd feel confident I could achieve that myself today.
It's a half day job for a competent person, who might also supply/fit a new solid wooden piece to fix to the house.... so not "the first bumbling person you encounter that says they can do it" either.0 -

Well, this is the thing.... to use it you have to go/be out of your way already. Access is only having walked past all the other houses, it's not a shortcut for anybody except the postman (and not much of one at all). You'd have to be starting at my front door and think "want to go to the house directly behind, so rather than walking round, I'll nip through". Most odd really.... unless it was a previous owner's friend who got so far and thought "Hey - this isn't right, looks like they sold/moved" .... and went to the back gate/garden to see, opened the gate, saw it wasn't their car in the spot ... and left.0 -
I guess for now I could get the locks/bolts fitted .... as I am here I can unlock one set until the postman's been (late morning).... and at least lock them overnight.
This is the bit where, if one's in a couple, the man heads gleefully towards his shed... for his power tools and a spot of "looking manly for a few hours". Single, it's another darned nuisance to deal with and find a tradesman for.0 -
If you locked the back gate, would the front gate need to be locked?
Once trespasser realised there was no through route, would the need to have a bolt on your front gate be diminished.
We had the reverse, the side gate was continually being left open and outward. So we thought somehow someone was coming through the garden and out through the gate. We found out it was a fox. Once we locked the side gate, it realised there was no point walking up the side path. Clever animals.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I think your opinion of the capabilities of the average man is rather exaggerated.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. My thoughts too. Though mine particularly likes drilling holes in things (if you're reading this michaels, that's not a euphemism). Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? On the "Good News" front, found the portable TV aerial, plugged it in, it seems to be working perfectly. I'd tried it before in my last place and hadn't had a good result with it at all, hence no previous urgency to find it as I didn't believe it'd give a good signal... but it does.0
