Why do people choose to get married?

Apart from being preggies - do people get together because they have common interests, or is it because they can simply tolerate each other long enough, or is it simply to feel less insecure?

What makes such relationships last, apart from just having kids? What makes relationships successful?

No trolling please...

I never got preggers as you so call it to get married, I never just got married because I simply tolerated him or to simply feel less insecure, what questions:eek:

What makes a relationship and makes it last apart from kids?

I think a far more interesting question is "Why do couples who have shared goals, love and respect for each other, believe their relationship is a lifelong commitment DON'T get married regardless of whether they have children or not?"

I don't need a husband to make me feel secure, so I guess it must have been love.... :heartpuls :heart2:

I'm getting married for two reasons

The first (and more socially acceptable reason) - I realised I didn't want to spend any part of my life without my other half, and in whatever capacity (we were friend for a long time before there was any romance involved) I've never been able to contemplate life without him... getting married means that hopefully I won't have to face that prospect for a very long time.

The second? I believe it's what God wants for us, and I'm delighted to be able to stand before God to make those promises.
Officially saved enough to cover the cost of our wedding! :A
  • I got married because I love my wife very much, and I wanted to form a family that would last for the rest of my lifetime.

I have a belief system that includes marriage.

I met a man I was happy to share my life with. He felt the same about me. We got married.

    Why not?

What I don't understand is why people think it's ok to have children (a permanent link) with someone they are not yet ready to marry. And, no, I don't really believe their argument of saving up for it or buying a house first etc.

There is also the practical side, if kids are involved - despite other reforms, the Social Security system still doesn't recognise a couple who are not legally wed, where 'Widows benefits/bereavement Allowance' are concerned.

It may the be the last thing anyone thinks about, but things happen, and one day, it might make a difference, for anyone left one wage short, and a growing family.

Beside which, I do actually think marriage provides a more secure environment for children.

I love my husband and love being married to him, it was a commitment, saying to each other and our families and freinds we want to grow old together. We'd been together 6 years before getting married but this just felt more final. We wanted to try and have children and thought that this is a nice security for them.

Plus, I hated calling him my "partner", "husband" sounds much nicer! It also makes finances simpler and if anything happens to each other he's my next of kin without making wills (yes, I really SHOULD do that though!).
