Clean up all areas where the cat has previously sprayed as the scent can trigger them to spray again in the same area. First wash all surfaces that have been sprayed with cat urine with a laundry detergent containing enzymes. Then mix up 50% white vinegar and 50% water in a spray bottle and spray the area well with the vinegar solution to discourage the cat spraying urine in the same place again.

For carpets 3 steps to follow

If the cat has recently urinated on the carpet, first absorb as much of the cat urine as possible using paper towels. Place several layers of clean paper towels over the cat urine area and tread on them so as to absorb as much of the urine as possible. Repeat with dry towels until no more moisture can be absorbed.

Next, use a spray bottle to wet the area with a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. Make sure you use enough of the solution to penetrate the fibers deep down.
After the vinegar treatment dry off the carpet as much as possible. You can assist drying by blotting with paper towels as described above.

If you own a wet/dry vacuum extractor use that to remove excess moisture.

Apply a handful of baking soda over the affected area. Mix a quarter of a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent and drizzle this solution over the baking soda. Alternatively you can use a spray bottle for the hydrogen peroxide solution.
(Do not use caustic detergent that you put in a dishwasher)

Work it well into the carpet with a soft brush or your fingers. Put on a pair of rubber gloves if you use your fingers.

Allow to dry. You can assist drying with a heater or a fan.

Once completely dry vacuum up the dried baking soda. The baking soda absorbs the odor and urine. Use a hard bristled brush to loosen up the baking soda if necessary.

That's all there is to it. It's as simple as that. 1-2-3 cat pee smell gone. It really does work.

Caution: Do not use Hydrogen Peroxide that is higher than 3% strength (10 Vol)
Stronger strengths may bleach a carpet.

To get rid of the smell of cat/dog/any urine, spray the area with soda water....just put some in a spray bottle. Soda water is alkaline and so neutralizes the acidic urine. You can then use a disinfectant on the areas to rid them of any bacteria.

I was advised to use soda water years ago when I had a new puppy, and disinfectant alone did not kill the smell, but the soda water did!!!!

  • Hi all,

Thankyou Skymist and Maddiemay I am currently using the method you describe Maddie but up to now I can still smell pee (all be it faintly), it does say repeat as necessary though so will keep at it. Will also get some soda water next time I'm shopping and give that a go. Am thinking maybe a professional clean may be in order at some point (although one carpet is fairly old so not sure it's worth it). Will manage situation for now and take stock when visitors have gone.

Am boiling today as DD1 has once more been living it up and treating us all like idiots with little regard.:mad::mad:
I once more feel like packing a bag and leaving.
I really must have tw*t written all over me. I feel like a coiled spring and am finding it really difficult to relax. The cat is one thing (and I don't dislike her really just the peeing, after all she is probably also very upset) but DD's attitude to her situation is another. I have been too lenient! I've tried to tread the fine line taking into account her mental health but enough is enough and it must be dealt with.

So no fabbing for me today cleaning and showdown. I can't go into full detail of the happenings as I don't want the family to see it all.
I can't help feeling that it is partly my own fault for not being ruthless enough. I've always wanted to help my children if i could but there is no helping some people is there?

Have a good fab friday everyone. Will try and fit in a bit of me time later.

Have you thought about getting a felliway diffuser for the cat? if it's stress that's making her pee it might calm her down a bit.
  • lizzie, hope you do make time for yourself later on.

I have just chucked a pile of clothes into the charity bag. Things that I'd been keeping hold of for a variety of reasons. I now only own one pair of trousers (skinny jeans), chucked my other pairs today. Feels great, I look rubbish in trousers.

I've been using some of the face oil I bought the other week on my hands and nails, they look great. My nails are super shiny and my hands are smooth, very happy.

    Have a good day everyone.
  • Happy Fab Friday everyone

Just off to Physio un a minute and then coffee with th Physio girls.

My week is going ok with the adrenal recovery programme - starting to feel more human again. Paleo eating going well - it definitely suits my system. Feeling a lot less heavy and bloated. Lots of veggies, salads and just a little fruit.

One thing I have tried to do is vary our diets more. It is so easy to get stuck in a rut so I'm experimenting and having a nice time playing domestic goddess.

Bit of a problem with cat fleas at the moment so will have to sort that out. Any tips or advice gratefully accepted. I'm being eaten alive.

Lizzie - sorry to hear you are struggling so much. However it's good to see you come out fighting and taking a stand. It's not easy but I think it has to happen.

Had a phone call from mum's doctor to discuss end of life care. I told her about my husband's passing and explained that that is what I wanted for mum ie a good death But that I was concerned about whether or not dad would try to override mums wishes. Mums doctormreassured me that she would work with my sister and I and that dad did not have the power of veto in this matter. It would be a joint pSthway between the family and mums medical team.

She was in total agreement with me and promised that mums wishes would be followed even though mum has not signed an advance directive. She said that all files and documentation would show this, that she would put. DNR in place and that there would be no invasive treatments. Such a relief.......

Ladies I cannot say this enough - protect yourselves and your loved ones in the event of serious illness - forward plan or at least discuss this. It's not morbid, it's practical......

Well done Alec - sounds like your fabbing is starting to pay off.

Right time to put he washing out and get cracking.

    Sun shining here :D

Lizzie, so sorry for your problems. I hope they get resolved soon.
LL - so sorry you are having to go through another "end of life" scenario so soon.

I have bought shoes :o Three pairs

After some searching and trying on - i ended up in TkMaxximus yesterday. Bought a Dune pair, similar to some I had tried on in the Dune shop earlier, but cost £20 less :T And a pair of brogues, and a pair of ankle boots. They were much needed though - now to throw out the tatty old pairs.

Agree with you, LL about the Paleo type diet. Whilst not strictly paleo i am usually no wheat no sugar (or low, anyway). I have cheated a bit this week and have paid the price. no more cheating for me.
I wanna be in the room where it happens

I did buy one it wasn't the felliway but another version I couldn't stand the smell tbh and as it seemed to have no effect gave up with it.

LL Sorry to see you're having to cope with another end of life care plan. Makes my problems seem insignificant in comparison. Regarding the fleas DD1 had an infestation once she used a spot on not sure which and indorex to treat the house.

Hello everyone :) Just about everyday recently I have tried to find time to catch up on this thread, but not made it until now sorry.

Lizzie I haven't read your full story yet, but I had a lot of problems with cat pee for a while from cats that came in through the cat flap. I eventually had to put it on 'one way' to stop them getting in. I tried all the steps above but it never went 100%. Then I read on another forum a recommendation for Fabreze air effects spray. I used it after cleaning as above and it thankfully removed those last traces of pee. Even on a very hot summer's day the smell had gone. I purchased it from Home Bargains for £1.99 and it was well worth it.

I am off work with back pain. I hurt myself at the start of term moving furniture in my classroom. I was off for two weeks and 10 days after being back I got injured again by a pupil. I saw the consultant on Tuesday who has arranged an MRI scan for next Tuesday and saw the physio this morning. It so disappointing as all the good work I did with exercising in the holidays has been undone.

I have managed to spend a few days sorting through clothes though and have ordered a few new things and two new Kipling bags ( a bit of a weakness of mine). I still haven't achieved my project 333 goal, but everything is so much better thought through and more co-ordinated which feels good :)

Sorry, no time for a proper post. I am doing Fab Friday as I've had my hair cut and highlighted ready to go away tomorrow. We're doing a Classical Tour of Turkey (Ephesus, Istanbul, Gallipoli etc). I've been there many times but always for a sunshine holiday.

Came on to say pru, sorry you're not well but hope all relevant accident/report forms have been filled in. Don't mean to be litigious but it's as well to be sure.

Have a good week all. :)
