Glad to hear you had a nice weekend away. And (to the horror of the yoghurt knitters) I have to admit that I often think that bangers are a false economy. If you don't have the mechanical know-how to do a lot of repairs yourself, it can be much cheaper in the long run to get something more reliable/newer.
As far as arthritis & exercise go, have you considered swimming? I forget where you're based but MoveGB have had a lot of introductory swimming offers on Groupon lately - if they're in your area they work out at about £1 per swim.Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?

Totally understand re new car - ours are beginning to cost too much and as we will be mortgage free next year we are seriously thinking about both getting new cars:eek: Well certainly in the next 18 months - going to hammer down debts a bit first. And here is one for the yogurt knitters................I am seriously thinking about going all electric:)

Sorry to hear about the arthritis. But yeah if it galvanises you into concerted weight loss, it will definitely help. I second swimming. You get a good work out, but little pressure on the joints. You might even be able to get a green prescription of the DR to get in free.
As to the new car thing, I agree that unless you can do repairs yourself, the banger can be more trouble than it is worth.
Hope things are progressing in your world ok.

A month away from this diary and a few things have changed. Had a massive weight loss (13 pounds) then had a setback and put the whole lot back on again. Restarted the process again but in a more measured way and am now down 11 pounds - despite the knees being challenging I have got back into the running - done 42km this week so far. Money-wise we are squeezing through, have the big trip coming up next week so everything is on hold til after that really but I'm going to have to get my additional income hat on again in September cos my salary goes down a bit from then. Ebay's been squeezed pretty dry when I look at the unsold stuff, my extra jobs are done for the season, survey sites and all that click-through palaver isn't going to cut the mustard so I'm going to have to get creative. Hope everyone's having a nice summer so far.2011: 301k in debt and morbidly obese (DFW)

Have you tried using anything like Strava, MrBoater? www.strava.com
I find it great for motivation and helping to reach targets for running/cycling using their challenges. Well done on the weight loss!0 -
Enjoy your holiday Mr B, relax after all that extra work. Don't forget that although the money may drop a bit soon, hopefully so will the stress at work. This should leave you with more energy for motivation in other areas of your life - a period of re-balancing.
And hey, not everyone gets to go Stateside, with or without reli's being there. Finances may be squeezed but you're also squeezing enjoyment out of life.0 -

Been MIA a while myself Mr B and work in the same mad world as you. I have also just done the new car 'thing' and my insurance, diesel and tax is cheaper for a car that I now trust to get me from A to B.
Make sure you get some decent R&R in the hols and don't beat yourself up over stuff. I am having two weeks completely school free while I re-assess everything in life with a bottle or two of vino (well in my case flavoured cider) to ease me through it. Then time to re-focus once I've sobered up again.
