Cat deterrant?

We don't always use our front door. I opened it this morning to discover a patch of our front lawn next to the door which has been scratched free of grass and used as a cat toilet. It stinks.
DH wants to rig up a camera so that we can see whose cats are doing it . I just want to make it completely unattractive to them NOW. So, fast solutions, please? I don't think the grass is going to grow back so it doesn't need to be plant based.
Have seen some gadgets that squirt water when they detect movement, but that's perhaps unfair to the postie!

Ultra sonic deterrants are awesome, my back garden is now pretty much mogturd free and the local fur bags all hate me.

This is the one I bought:

Thanks. Will have to check whether children can hear it (we have a 3 year old with very acute hearing!).Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
Lemon juice apparently works, basically citrus, that sonic repellant as above, I've also heard that if you have a local zoo you can get lion poo which they won't go anywhere near (maybe B&Q do it too?), there's also stuff you can pick up at B&Q which is garlic based iirc.
We recently put burglar paint near the top of our fence and covered it with lemon juice so moggies don't tread it all over their owner's carpet and that worked a treat.
Whatever you do, don't use bleach. It encourages them to toilet there!0 -

Top end of human hearing sensitivity is 20,000 Hz, the gadgets are advertised at 18-24,000 Hz so it is possible that they might detect the sound when it goes off. It's not continuous and only triggets when the infra red sensor is tripped, plus has an on/off switch if you want to use that part of the garden.0 -
Pepper, citrus peel or lion poo.
Our neighbour has a motion sensor frog from poundland that works the best I've seen of anything (the previous occupants of our house didn't care about their cats doing their business anywhere and didn't even mention citrus or pepper to them).0 -
As mentioned, citrus is good, so you can try some orange peel.
Setting up a camera wouldn't really do much use, people can't stop their cats going there really. Cats aren't classed as property so you can't sue them for damage their cats did. Cats are lovely things, but it winds me up when they dig up my seedlings too so I sympathise. I use some "cat off" or something from the garden centre, but the only thing that worked properly was netting, but probably the rain washed it away.0 -
Get your own cat - It will chase all offenders off its territory and go poop on theirs!

Think I might try lemon juice and cayenne pepper first then.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0

Think he was thinking he'd deliver their "offerings" back to their owners.
