Send an email to Mind and link in the offending articles. Maybe they can offer the press some advice on the matter.

  • That's an idea! It happens so often and it understandably makes the public afraid of Schizophrenics, it is seen as the worse of the mental health diagnoses and so frequently linked with violence. Either that or people mistake it for MPD and presume it is split personalities. It is one of the least understood conditions by people, most sufferers like me spend our days with voices telling us how awful we are, there is no urge to harm another person at all.

Elsien, if you don't want to play those games, (and it's not game-playing, it's a Machiavellian power-struggle), then don't. In that case, you're not in the wrong. If they say you are, that is all part of the power-struggle.
Stand your ground, stay calm, and just keep repeating the mantra 'no, I'm afraid it's not possible for me to do that', or whatever the situation dictates. No protracted argument, no justification of your actions, just repeat 'no, I'm afraid it's not possible for me to do that', etc.

Edit - please can no-one quote this - I'd like opinions but will probably delete it later.

Stick it in an account for a year, without comment to anyone, and see how you feel then.

You can always donate it to a mental health charity, lol.

Give it to charity. Then you're not accepting it or giving it back.

  • Without giving figures away is it a lot of money? If you gave it away could you give it back without any causing you any problems if you had to later on? If the answer is no go with the suggestion of putting into a bank for a year and see what happens if yes then just give it to charity and maybe post the receipt from the charity back to them.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Does this family member have children? Gift the amount divided by the children ( plus any amount or gift you might choose to give...or not) back to the children this Christmas.

The thing is, if you give it to charity straight off, you will have accepted it.
Ok. So how about this. You seal the money up in a Jiffy bag containing the following note, and then pop it back through their letterbox:-

"I understand from a family member that the enclosed money, which was posted through my letterbox on (date),was from you.
I am afraid that I cannot accept this money and am therefore returning it to you."

Make a copy of the letter for your records.

If any more money is posted through your letterbox, do the same again but this time adding:-

" if any more sums of money arrive, I will immediately donate them to (name of a charity) in your name, so that it will be your donation to that charity".

And do that, but enter into no further discussion about the money with anyone.

I've just worked out why it's bothering me. It's not the money itself, it's that oh no here we go again feeling. I thought I'd reached a point where we all knew where we stood and I could not get involved from here on in. This is just stirring it all up again when in my head I'd put it all to rest.
