WaS, could you wear some kind of grippy slipper socks in the hospital, and slip on flip flops or shoes outside for your next appointment.

What about something like this - leather mule slippers. These are M&S, £24. They are only slippers, but if you're just getting into the car, they may be ok.
Yes, and as Whitewing says, maybe flip flops for very 'outside' walking

Thank you, LIR! I do love the fact that I have feet as smooth as a child's but I do not like the agony from even slippers! I didn't think of buying shoes a size bigger or using powder and pop socks. I shall give that a try. The state of my feet after the last hospital appointment was atrocious and I had only worn shoes for a couple of hours and was mostly sitting down. My toes were bleeding and I had blisters on both heels, and I have another appointment in 2 weeks so need a solution!.

The problem with shoes too big is they move more so can also rub more. But I am guess ping you send WASp to get them?

What kind of shoes are you wearing.....leather shoes? Trainers?

Before I was declared onto fit to fly a couple of years ago, I cannot remember when the last time I flew was, ( my memory suffers with my condition) but it was on a business trip with found in rates, and because I was doing better back then and I wanted to walk around the city we were going to I went and bought some sandles that I called 'the ugliest shoes in the world'. I am a real shoe girl, you know? And to buy sensible walking sandles was a bit depressing but a sensible choice. They were a bit like a woman's version of this

    http://www.footwearworl.com/clarks-unstructured-unbow-sporty-mens-sandal-brown-nubuck-p-13356/

All the holes are a bit bigger.

Anyway, I walked all round the city in the ugliest shoes in the work and admitted they had been a great choice, though getting into shoes for the business suppers was hard I remember.

On the flight home I decided to wear them, and we have to get two train changes from the air port, changes are hard, because I am stiff and achey and tired by then, and the last one I was very sore and my feet felt awful and as I looked down I said to fir...

    'My feet'

And he looked and said, just sit on the bend, I'm calling for advice

So he called NHs direct, and they called straight back and suggested we make our way home unless anything changed on route.

My feet had swollen RIGHT through the shoes. So I had feet like an aliens, or hedgehog bread. all swollen through the holes of the shoes. :)

Never had my swelling been more obvious, we'd not realised it was that bad :)

  • Ouch, LIR! MY feet are always swollen as are my legs by the end of the day despite diuretics so that is another issue with shoes. I have tried flip-flops (bleeding between my toes where the pole goes), trainers and leather shoes. Slipper socks are a good idea for the hospital and mules might work for getting to the car and into the hospital, I shall try and get hold of both for 2 weeks time.

Like you LIR, I love pretty shoes. I always used to wear points and heels and now both are out of the question. So are flats because they pull the muscles in the back of my calves as they aren't used to being used so I need a tiny sloping and supportive heel. I can't tell you how frustrating this is, the problems of never leaving the house are unexpected sometimes!

Another types of shoe to consider might be a modern Dance or jazz shoe.

The leather and soles are both very soft and pliable. They wouldn't withstand much hiking, but they would be up to hospital trips and stuff. They would be the nearest thing I can think of to bare feet but shod tbh.
  • I never thought of that either! I thought slippers would work but they have seams and my feet are so sensitive that they cause blisters. What a completely ridiculous situation to get into. I can't be the only one though, it must happen to people on bed rest, too surely? Although possibly not over a period of 6 years.

As I say, happens to me, in just periods of a couple of months, but I walk more, so don't have the muscle problem, and I do wear some 'shoes' of some nature,

Incidentally, even though I an almost always barefoot I do have some rough skin, on my heels, because I walk in my bare feet,

For a while when I was younger I walked a LOT in bare feet and the skin on my feet was Rather tough!!!

This is what jazz shoes look like. The leather is butter soft. They don't have the binding at the end ballet shoes have, do they are softer even than them, but the leather is similarly flexible to leather ballet shoes.

You would NOT want split soles just a normal sole. :) but this is a could picture to show flexibility and softness so I clicked on it anyway.

    Amazing.

I felt the musculature of my face drop and my eyes droop to become heavy lidded.

if WaS did get those beautifully soft jazz shoes, would you think normal size, or normal and a half, or 1 size bigger?
