Lidl sell 24 jaffa cakes for 65p which taste better than all the other brands/generic. Also Asda smartprice biological liquid is good. Also their non-concentrate fabric conditioner is much cheaper to use and just as good as any other.

    Tesco Value Chocolate Digestives

OK, they are smaller and the covering of chocolate is thinner but they are a helluva lot cheaper and they taste great

And they only have half the weight watchers points! :T

Please bear in mind that blowing this hot air uses higher amounts of energy and is therefore not environmentally friendly. It is a process called "through air drying" and not only Asda Shades are produced this way! I have very sensitive skin and find the only tissue i can use is Nouvelle, which is very environmentally friendly.

I agree, Nouvelle is the only roll I use (£2.49 for 12 from Quality Save) not only are dyed toilet rolls bad for the environment they can cause skin irritations.

I have to say that although I do buy own brands I never buy from the "value" ranges. They may be cheap but often so are the ingredients! I always read the labels on items I have not bought before. I prefer to buy the good quality stuff and stock up when it's on offer.

Incidentally Branston baked beans are only 99p for 4 tins in Quality Save:T

If you've been watching the music festivals on telly, you'll have seen the brilliant American band, Interpol. They are not to be confused with the Tesco Value band, Editors, who are p**h.

I recommend you Turn on the Bright Lights and don't Stand Outside Hospital Doors.

    ;-)

yeah, i agree - editors are pants......
  • Definitely agree with DesperateSaver and strawberrymuesli. I actually work for the factory that makes Asda Shades (as well as Velvet) and we are currently running a questionnaire and blind feel test of the differences between our competitors Andrex and Asda Shades. I can tell you that the majority people in the blind feel test think Asda Shades is softer than Andrex and at a very cheap price. Try it yourself...

Being a student I'm constantly buying Tesco Extra Value stuff and Morrison's Better Buy stuff and I've stumbled across a gem that all my mates love...

8p noodles!!!! They are JUST like Supernoodles, only you get slightly less per pack, have a scan next time your around that aisle in Tescos or Morrisons =) especially if you have kids as they will love em!

agreed, my daughter would live on these if she could!
  • I have been buying Sainsbury's Balance instead of 'Special K' for over a year. Not only is it much cheaper, but it tastes better. Morrisons version is also as good.

I do buy a few branded products, e.g. Brown sauce = HP, beans = Heinz

However, I echo the praise of others about value products. For example, why do people buy branded medicines? Immodium is just loperamide hydrochloride. There are loads of generic versions of it at a 1/6 the price. Just check the dosage and ingredients. Oh, beware of extra-strength painkillers. They can't recommend too high a dosage so most of them are just a double dose in one tablet, yet the prices are more than double. Read the ingredients, not the blurb.

I use Asda value roll-on anti-perspirant. It's very cheap and works. It's very lightly perfumed but that's a good thing in my book because most of the brands are strong smelling deodorants which lead to overkill when in addition to eau de toilette/perfume/cologne. Again, check the incredients and you'll see it's got the various aluminium-based chemicals that stop you sweating.

Finally, I have found Asda's frozen value meats quite useful for staying a carnivore on a low budget. For example, it's frozen lean steak mince (own-brand not smartprice) is quite lean and tasty in a bolognaise (plenty of tomatoes, herbs and red wine are the key ingredients anyway). The frozen smartprice chicken legs/thighs/pieces are so cheap as to boggle the mind. Sure they're pumped with water but that doesn't destroy the savings. My advice is defrost them, steam them, and then just separate the meat from the bone and cook it in some sauce-based dish. The texture of the shredded chicken often works better in sauces than chunks of breast and at 1/4 of the cost.
  • Aldi Smoothies are pretty good - £1.09 for 1L. Much cheaper than PJ's and other brands, but still no added stuff.
Would also recommend their Parsnip & Black Pepper crisps. Much higher fibre than potato crisps, taste less greasy too.
Certain things I only ever buy in Lidls e.g. chocolate (Coffee and Cream, 79p for 200g is a particular favourite of mine). Tinned tomatoes, passata, olive oil (for cooking), tinned tuna all cheaper than equivalent named brands but just as good. Straciatella ice cream (£1 a litre just now) is really nice, tastes almost like it comes from a real gelateria.
To be honest, can't think of anything I ever had from Lidls/Aldi that was a disappointment, and a lot of 'continental' products (cheese, cold meat) are definitely cheaper and higher quality than that available elsewhere.
