i hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread! congratulations on the weight loss, you're doing really well! i'm going to start trying to lose weight. i haven't even been on the scales for ages because i've been burying my head in the sand! i'd guess i'm about 21st and i'm 5ft9. i need to lose around half my body weight but i guess i'll just try my best and aim small for now! i'm a member of a gym but it's horrible in there (horrible but cheap!) so i've just e-mailed a gym nearer home to see how much it is. even if it costs a bit more, if it's nicer i may be more inclined to go! x
Hi Claire, welcome to the thread, the more the merrier!
What don't you like about the gym that you currently go to? I tried out a few gyms before I settled on this one. What I like most about my gym is that there are all sorts of people there, all shapes and sizes, all ages etc. On my tour, I was very impressed to see a few very big people being helped at separate times by the staff. In other gyms I have found that the bigger people or unfit people are just left to their own devises, which is silly because they are the ones that need the help most (me included).Well done! I also weighed myself at 10st 10lbs last night!
Hi! :hello:
I've avioded the gym for so long, but it feels really good once you start working out. Definately go for what suits you - even if it's a little more expenisive - if you hate your gym then you'll never go! The first step is always the hardest, but you've admitted you need to do something about your weight which is a great start!
I would suggest small changes to begin with such as changing to skimmed milk/diet drinks/swetener instead of sugar etc. You'll be suprised at how many calories you can save with a few swaps.
Hi Bunineyay, 10st 10lbs for you too! Well done!
Claire, I agree with Bunnie, if you hate your gym, you'll never go. One of the ones I tried out what a very posh and upmarket gym. They were very cheap for kids though, only £60 a year. So I thought I would try it out. It was awful! It was full of upper class ladies chatting away while walking on the treadmill and applying their lipstick every 5 mins. No signs of a sweat going on at all! That's not what I wanted, I wanted to see sweat pouring off people..so that I didn't have to worry when I did the same
The one I go to now is more expensive for the kids, £15 p/m each. So I basically pay £70 a month for all 3 of us. That gives me unlimited use of the gym and pool, gives my 14 year old unlimited use of the pool and junior gym sessions, and my 10 yr old unlimited use of the pool.
So, today is rest day-no gym or classes. I am a bit sad really, but the instructor at my induction emphasised the importance of having regular rest days between workouts, especially when you are new to it.
So, instead of a workout I am taking the kids swimming. My 10 yr old has Dyspraxia which effects coordination and motor movements, so the more I can practice things like swimming with him, the better. And he loves it too
Just had lunch- pitta stuffed with falafel and salad, a pear and Satsuma and a packet of crisps. Could have done without the crisps, I know.0 -
Swimming is at 5.30pm and we'll be there until about 7pm. I am unsure what time to have dinner, as I heard you should not go swimming straight after a meal.
Any advice?0 -

Before my wedding I slimmed down and was attending the gym 11hrs per week min. That was 2yrs ago. I now weigh 11st 10lbs and 5ft
I gave up my gym membership as it wasn't working out to be cost effective/safe to travel home. (Don't drive but used to attend the gym with my mum who drove, she has now moved away, so I had also lost my gym buddy)
I am now starting to push myself to be the healthier happier person I want to see in the mirror. I have started running and have completed my first run this morning. I'm hoping that I might be able to get the dog involved too. I am also doing home work outs.
My problem is I love food, all food and clear plates. I struggle to leave any food on my plate even if I am stuffed. Does anyone else have this issue?
I try to dish myself up the smaller portion that I know is the right size for me but I almost feel like I am cheating myself out of a decent meal. Weird psychology huh! That voice in your head that says you can’t do this is a LIAR!

I heard on QI that the not eating before swimming thing is a myth, but if it were me I probably wouldn't want to swim on a full stomach anyway. I would suggest maybe a little snack like a banana before you go to give you the energy boost. No more goo hoarding!

I would eat after swimming. I feel sick if I swim on a full stomach, in fact I prefer to wait at least 2 hours.0 -
Thanks for the advice. We are eating before we go, as the kids would never be able to wait until after 8pm for dinner (by the time we got home and made dinner etc).
Welcome First_TroubleI will write more later, just about to make dinner!

I'm like this (except I hate root vegetables!). I LOVE food, I love the feeling of having had a good meal. Thankfully I love meat and don't eat bread/pasta as I'd be a carboholic!
Plus I'm a compulsive and emotional binge eater which don't help...!

Dinner needs another 20 mins!
I love food too. I spent many years in my teens with various eating problems, and ate very little. Its actually surprising that these days I eat so much! That said, I still very rarely clear my plate- I always need to have something, even if its just 1 slice of carrot or a pea, left on my plate. I don't know why either!0 -
First_Trouble, have you tried using a smaller plate? I've done that in the past and it sounds weird, but it did trick my brain0

Do they do any early morning/late night sessions? The pool would probably be a lot quieter during these times. I love swimming in an empty pool!
My mum could swim with no problems, but she went to "advanced" swimming lessons for adults for a boost. My housemate at uni used to swim for her county, so when we went to the gym she gave me some advice with my swimming too. It definately helps knowing the correct techniques.
If you don't like getting water in your ears and want a more laid back workout, why not try some exercises in the pool? Walking in the water isn't just for OAPs, it's a good resistance workout.
I would prefer adults only session as then I'm guaranteed no kids
Was looking at aquafit but worried there may be splashingWantToBeSE wrote: »Why not phone the reception and ask? Or make sure you are early so that you can grab the lane nearest to the edge?
Yeah could try going early
I emailed and they said the lanes are restricted between 18:00 and 20:00 but then it's the full pool from 20:00 till 20:45
I've asked them how long a session isWantToBeSE wrote: »Got on the scales this morning and have lost another pound! NOt taking it as my official weight until next week though, as I am only supposed to weigh on Mondays! but still, its the first time I have seen 10st 10lbs on the scale for a very long time
