Del on restart has taken me to standard CMOS features. I'll check default or load fail safe defaults...0

The old one is IDE. The new should be IDE too. If he used the same leads and connectors, it should be fine. Especially if Vista installed ok.
Can you see which BIOS version is installed? Latest version is F60 -

It's just failed again. How do I check which bios version it is. I've changed access to lba on CMOS I think I read that in why error loading. I'll try again in the morning. I did see IDE on the CMOS screen..0 -
Will show BIOS version whilst booting up and also on the BIOS setup screen.
Having difficulty downloading the latest BIOS file, so can't do much there.
Your manual is here0 -

Thanks for helping me trying to fix...0 -
Have a go at installing Vista or Windows 7 for now. Let us see if there is a problem with the hard drive.
You can use your existing Vista disc or you can download Windows 7 from here0 -

Because I've gone into the CMOS and bios screen, I've changed as per manual because some were not the same. It seems to have really messed up. Shall I try reinstalling on the old hard drive?..0 -
That would be Pri for Primary.
You can go into BIOS Setup > Advanced BIOS Setting to re-enable it.
What do you have on this screen?
This should be on Auto
Set the CD ROM as the first to Boot and the Hard Disk to be the second.0 -
I really don't think the OP will have a clue about how to go about making screen prints of the BIOS ( I don't either!)0

Didn't ask for a screenshot.
They can simply write down which entries are populated.0
