lost track of what's going on here.

buying a new machine, and windows8 for hundreds or fixing the 8 year old one with a new internal hd or reinstall

or just use the laptop as the desktop is rarely used

Yes. But not so fast. It's just an option at this point, not a recommendation.
No need to buy an OS at this stage.

Let's get the old PC up and running. Then you can decide.

Ok my simplistic plan is wait for hdd to come, take out old hdd, insert new hdd reinstall recovery discs the put in old hdd and retrieve my old data. Then see how computer is working before deciding on buying a new tower. Btw I will be away for a few days so won't be able to do this til next Friday. (Unless hdd comes Saturday.

My thinking was that old computer running slow and will need to buy a new one but think I will now first try and fix old computer see how it goes before buying a new one. I thought that an eight year old computer would need replacing. Laptop is my sons and I prefer to use the desktop for things I can't do on my ipad. Thanks for your advice

Very occasionally, slowness in old machine can be caused by a hard disk fault, but in 99.9% of cases, it's not a hardware problem at all, just software, and reinstalling cures it - see speedup sticky thread. If the hard disk is working ok, the age of the machine doesn't matter, it will be as fast as it was when you bought it.

As already mentioned a reinstall to the same hard disk would wipe your data, so put the new one in first.

if you have an external hard disk, you could backup both machines to it using macrium, which makes any problem easy to recover from in future

Laptops use less power than desktops, tend to be better value, and can be plugged into external monitors and keyboards, provided they have the right connection, if you want the best of both worlds.

Got the new hard drive and put in tower then husband loaded the wrong disc (it was vista which was for a previous laptop). I have then tried loading up windows Xp but message is now error loading page. Should I be cleaning up the hard drive or can I just reinstall windows Xp over the top of vista. Nifty did say that my original disc will be out of date

Nifty digits, is there any way I can burn the disc on my desktop. I don't know whether the laptop is able to burn discs and I'm having a problem downloading the imgburn and then saving the file as we don't seem to have the facility to save on the laptop. We don't have a word processing package.

Every machine has the ability to save files. You don't need a word processing package.
Which Browser are you using? Brand name and model of laptop?

    XP installation instructions

Google Chrome drops downloads in the Downloads folder.

So type Downloads or just go directly to the folder.

    To use Search:
On the Start screen, you can tap or click the Search button to open Search. Or if you have a keyboard, just start typing. (If you can't see the Search button on your Start screen, you don't have the latest update for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1. For more information, see Installing the latest Windows 8.1 Update.)
You can press the Windows logo key +S to open Search. To search for a file on your PC or OneDrive, press the Windows logo key +F. And to search for settings on your PC, press the Windows logo key +W.
