Install Windows to the new hard drive. Once machine is back up and running, you can plug the old drive in(in one way or another) and copy the data needed, over.
The Lenovo wouldn't be my choice at that price point. It's specification is not much better than this Acer Aspire XC-603 for £129.99
The issue with the ACER is that you would need to install an OS for yourself.
Not difficult if you are not afraid.
What operating system would I use. Do I buy windows 7 or 8? From ebuyer or pc world type place and is it just downloading the disc? Or if not what does it involve?..0 -

Cancel the order.
Moreover, you don't need a caddy if you simply buy the new drive.
Ok thanks. I was to pay for it in store...0 -
havent seen anything yet suggesting a new drive is required.
you can get at your data without a caddy, for the price of a blank cd, but you need somewhere to put it!!

One could attempt to repair the install, but a bit of internal maintenance is probably long overdue(noisy fan) and for £10 the OP has peace of mind that he won't accidentally overwrite his data.0 -

A couple of extra hoops, but that is why the price is so low.
I've ordered the hard drive. If it was easier I would go with windows 8 then.
Do I buy discs to upload windows 8. Do you put it in cd drive and upload or is it more complicated than that? Thanks..0 -

You could download the disc in the first instance, in order to test the machine.

The hard drive or the PC?
You would put it in the DVD drive and reboot to begin the install.0 -

Hdd I've ordered.
I've been looking at windows 8 disc would it be 32 bit or 64 bit. Just would like to make sure I am able to put the os on the acer before I buy it...0
