Do you feel a weight has been lifted from your shoulders now?
And what about another look at doing a PGCE?0 -
I'm not really sure that a weight has been lifted from my shoulders, but I am trying to moderate my natural concerns about what would be a very big change to our lives. And what about another look at doing a PGCE?
Intellectually, I know that I could do the job and I can see why it sounds like a good fit on paper. On the other hand, it feels like it's a good fit because I'm trying to force it to be.
I could end up being one of those wonderful engaged teachers who takes to it like a duck to water. Or I could end up like one of the teachers from the Simpsons, drinking heavily and phoning it in with 'movie time'.
I'm not engaged in my current job, but it doesn't hurt anyone bar me. I'm not willing to risk starting children off on the wrong foot if it turned out to be a career that didn't suit.
I hear that a lot of graduates don't last very long at all?0 -
Good luck Ed. Me and Dave earnt the same for years whilst I worked 3 days a week but the second I went over that my earning changed a lot, plus whilst part time my increments continued to go up and so now I'm on the highest. It all goes in the same pot, and its not something we think about, we both pick up extra hours when available. I sometimes felt he didn't recognise just how demanding my job was, he supervised about 5 staff, I line manage over 40, but he now line manages 3 and his role has changed so he gets it now. We often talk about renovating properties and if he took vr I would definitely support his decision to do this as I know he'd love it. (He is an electrician by trade and very "handy")
Btw I'm a estj.Morgage till Nov 30 GOAL MFW Sept 2016Aug 11 - £100k Aug 2016.... It's GONE!!!!!
2014 GOAL HIT 5 Stone! 2016 GOAL to be a MF marathon runner.

Hi E,
Good luck with your plans to change to a more satisfying work life. There's a choice I made over ten years ago, one I've not regretted work wise for one moment, even though, ten years later, I still don't earn what I did back then.
Financial regrets? We sold our home when we relocated. What I have found is with the much lower income it's been quite hard to find something to buy that would suit us and be within the current budget. Also, during that time, despite the recession, Edinburgh prices haven't exactly soared, but they are forever on the uptick. So in spite of our incomes getting higher over time, we've never been quite "ahead of the game" here to be able to afford what we would like. The other thing I have found, again due to lower incomes, is that any mortgage terms we are offered are not quite the best offer, something we took for granted in the higher income days.
My advice would be to buy the place of your dreams whilst you have the higher incomes. That way, you should be able to get on the best deal. And then just trust in your plan, i.e. that over time, once you have moved career wise, your income will grow again and the dream house will become steadily more affordable over time.
I fear if you wait say 5 years - you mentioned looking in and around Clarkston, an area I know quite well, - prices will have gone up 10%-20% in the interim. For good quality properties, both in Edinburgh and Glasgow, I wonder if the owners even noticed the recession.0 -
I think, Ed that we lose 50% of new entrants after two or three years.0

Mhhh... perhaps I should consider the low risk world of professional rocketeering as a fall-back? :eek:0

Sitting listening to some music from La Boheme on Classic FM, lovely. It is just the thing to drown out the construction noise from the plot behind our building, my seat is bouncing so much that I feel like I have restless leg syndrome! :rotfl:
I went for my 8.75 miles last night. By the end, it was possibly the most gruelling 1350 calories that I have ever got rid of. I then came home, had a bath and was blech with tiredness by 10. I get rewards tho, today's lunch will be a bag of chips eaten across from some inspiring architecture on Glasgow Green :T
I've also caught up with my office admin and have thought up some further inspirational items for my Kindle wishlist.
