Your mum hasn't got a clue what she's talking about.

Who else cleans three times a week? Both mum and I clean our places once a week and vacuum 5 in the kitchen and where we eat 4 times a week.

Instead of going on about how boring she is, if you are a real friend you would try to make life more interesting for her. Why not suggest things she could do, clubs she could join etc? Why not take her out for some fun activities yourself? Bearing in mind she may not have much to live on hence talking about "offers at cheap shops".

This was my thought when I read the OP.

Maybe she's not got the disposable income to allow her to get out at all. If you live alone and have a low income you don't go out because it all costs money, so you stay in unless there is something specific occurring that you can afford (e.g. meeting with you) - then, nothing's happened since.

I don't even try to go out or make friendships with people specifically because I know I'd be boring as I don't do anything ..... it's easy to get caught like that.

Also clearly does not understand the link between her DS's persistent coughing at home and her excessive use of cleaning products. He does not cough at work etc.

The overpowering cleaning products at hers makes me wheeze.

Her pensions her giving her £50 a week more than she did when working. Plus getting free bus travel. Money isn't the issue.

You and your mother might want to do some research on OCD before you start bandying about terms you clearly don't understand.

Oh, and plenty of people clean three times a week or more! I work full time, have a good social life and plenty of hobbies and clean at least that much.

It sounds as if being retired is something she hasn't come to terms with.

She could volunteer in a charity shop, join the WI or U3A, take an art class eye.

However, friendship should be dependent on age. One of my good friends is 18 years older than me. We share many interests.

I didn't mean to use ocd, excessive is the word. Or OCD in her case means over cleaning disorder.

Cleaning 3 times a week is not excessive - if your at home all day the house will need claned more than if your at work 9 - 5 every day.

My mum vaccumms, brushes the floors and dusts the house every day (I think its a habit from when we used to have a coal fire lit every day - as the house would get really dusty then).

Some people I know say when they clean 3 times a week, it means 1 day dusting, one day bathroom(s) another day washing the lino and laminated floors,. She does everything. Her house is a 3 bed semi and takes her 1,5 hours more per session than what my mum does in a week in a 4 bed detached.

    My parents' house is spotless.

I wish some of these 'obsessive cleaners' would come here. I'd willingly pay them. I hate housework. I quite like washing, seeing it blowing on the line in the sunshine, and when it piles up, I iron it.

There are only 2 of us here, no dogs or cats and no smokers, so IMHO the house does not get all that dirty. Even if it did, once a week would be fine. And I couldn't make housework into a topic of conversation.
