    Ooops should've worded that better!!

Okay so we've had a breakthrough tonight.

Derek was, as usual, in the kitchen under the picture.

I decided to try giving him a Dreamie, so got down on the floor and gently reached with my hand into his little lean-to. He came forward very hesitantly and had a sniff; I put the Dreamie down and he slowly ate it.

I repeated this a few times, with 5-10 minutes between each one.

Then on the last one, as his head was down eating it, I gently stroked it.

Well, it was like someone had just switched his "cat" switch to "on". He arched his back, thrust his face against my hand, started rolling over on the floor, and purring like a diesel engine, and then started head rubbing everything within 2 feet of his lean-to. I sat down on the floor and he climbed on and off my lap, clawed my thighs (ouch) and was just generally very cute.

Now, he's not miraculously "cured" of his timidness; he just bolted from the lounge into the living room when I met his gaze... but hey it's made my day.

Brilliant news Martin, he will get used to it a lot more now.

Try with just holding your hand out like I said previously. If he is anything like madame here, he will rush towards it and nearly take your hand off with the force. She nibbles my fingers. She loves being petted all around her neck and ears.
Get some of the meaty sticks like webbox or whiskas. rip them up into small pieces and hold them out in your fingers to him. Tibs here, wont eat them unless she can take them out of my fingers, she puts here nose up to having to eat them off the palm of my hand or desktop.

Just try as often as you can with him, he will come around quite quickly. If he gets on your knee like in the picture, stop stroking him, he may lie down on you, after padding you for ages.

Going to bed soon and will have the normal fight of whose bed is it ! She is on it now, curled up. I have to pick her up slightly to move her over, but she sees that as an intrusion and decides to attack my bare arms,it is starting to look like I self harm with all the scratches.

You got to love em ! lol

Great news! Sounds as if he has settled and he will most probably start exploring more. I bet it wont be long before he is demanding lap time
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Oh Martin, when you said this:
Well, it was like someone had just switched his "cat" switch to "on"
...I just wanted to hug you both. He's yours and you're his, well done on being patient, it really is worth it when they're affectionate isn't it?

My cat Arthur is currently trying to get ON my laptop whilst I'm typing here… once upon a time when he was a rescue cat he hid under the TV's fitted shelves (back when TVs were massive cubes) for over a week. Thanks for posting the update and pictures.
Whoops there goes another year, there goes another pint of

Thank you all for the comments. Very good to have so much support. I'm feeling quite low tonight, so I'm hoping some bonding with Derek will make me feel better. I've bought some other cat treats, Whiskas ones, he seems to like them more than dreamies. You're all very nice people x

awwwwww - nothing like a bit of bribery to get a cat eating out of your hand - unfortunately, its a while before you realise that its the cat that has the 'upper paw'!
my cat will eat most treats - Dreamies are the ones he never rejects. he loves Webbox Treat sticks too. he will NOT eat any catnip treats - catnip's for sniffin and rolling in maaaannn!!!!!!!!!!! but most cats do love them. its trial and error as their tastes are like humans - but far more pernickety!
he is gorgeous martin - and if that's you in the pic............you aint half bad yourself!!!!!!!!!! and as I am probably old enough to be your mam if not your nan, I hasten to say - you look very like my gorgeous youngest son!

Flattery will get you everywhere

So, tonight, Derek was in his house as usual. So I coaxed him out with a treat and some strokes, and stroked him all the way over to the sofas (AFAIK he's never been near the sofas).

I was so happy when he hopped up onto it! I was less happy when he started scratching it like mad, even less happy when he switched to scratching my leg like mad, so I guess some sort of sofa covering might be in order.

Anyway sorry for the repetitive photos but here's my cat on my sofa :j:j:j
