Aww I've really enjoyed reading this thread...Desmo sounds lovely. Perhaps because he's been used to his rehoming pen, maybe he does'nt realise there's a whole house out there to explore?
Madrhino I think has the solution...when I get down on the floor my Dolly cat comes over to me and rolls on her back with her face in mine.
My last cat took ages to get used to the house...it took weeks for her to settle in, get her scent on things so she knew it was her home.....it will take time.
As for the food, Dolly will bring in food from her bowl in the kitchen into the livingroom where we're eating and eat some with us while we're having tea. And she'll take biscuits and put them in her bowl for later. Don't worry Derek will be fine. You wait, he'll be wanting to try what's on your plate soon. xxCurrent debt and mortgage: £25, 820.35 Debt/Mortgage at start: £92,598 (27/09/2010)

I'll try the sitting on the floor thing, maybe tomorrow - I've just had a bit of a fright! I'm lying on the sofa watching tv. I've put a bit of tuna on a plate near his tv stand. He comes out and eats it, has a good scratch, and walks off behind the other sofa and out of my view.
After a few minutes of silence I wonder where he is, there aren't many places he can hide on that side of the room.
Verrrry slowly I creep onto the other sofa and peek over the top. No sign of him on the floor anywhere. I very slowly tip toe round to see if he's gone into his hot pink carry box. Nope. And he's not inside the little stand that the phone sits on.
The door is closed, there's literally no nooks and crannies he could have gone into.
I'm flummoxed.
Then I have a thought - could he have somehow got behind the curtains and onto the windowsill?! The curtains are shut but stop a good foot off the ground with no step up or anything.
So I sneak out the back door, walk down the alley to the front of the house and there he is on the windowsill staring out at the street!!
I come back in and he peeks out into the room at the sound of the door; and trots back to his tv stand
Honestly had me at a loss for a while.0 -

My cat Salem didn't go to the toilet for a few days even though he ate lots.
Then he went loads.
Just takes awhile for them to feel comfortable with it.
Cats are funny with food. Salem sometimes takes food out his bowl and puts in on the floor and eats it from there. And he often puts food in his mouth , tuns off with it and eats it somewhere else almost as if he thinks we are going to steal it.
Always makes me smile.INACTIVE ACCOUNT0 -

Bless him.
Cats are great at hiding.
A couple of years back we had a panic when our family cat went missing. Turns out he was hiding under a blanket and had never left the room he was in
Also i have had many a scare with our own cats. Salem not so much but our previous cat Jessie twice we couldn't find her. She was a house cat at the time and we spent ages searching for her. The one occasion even now we have no clue where she hid , she just reappeared.
Your heart does skip a beat when you can't find them.INACTIVE ACCOUNT0 -
Just had a thought - is Derek's litter tray near his food? They tend to like a bit of space between them.0
-
No we've separated them, and his tray is hidden behind a large box so we can't see him when he uses it - when I came down this morning, he'd used it!
:j
Never thought I would get excited about seeing cat poop.0 -
I remember that feeling! It was so exciting!
Well done Derek... bit of exploring, used the tray..... he'll be asleep on your head before you know it0 -
Has he got anywhere high up he can sit/lie? Madame here, likes to go for the highest point she can and then look down on us from a great height. I went away for a couple of nights last week. I was packing a small suitcase, turned my back for a minute and she was in it ! When I packed it, I out it on the bedroom floor. When I woke up in the morning, she was asleep on top of it. She is driving OH mad, as she is adamant that she wants to be on his desk, where he makes cards. I have ended up putting a pillow on the top shelf for her and she sleeps on it.
I got her one of these and she goes beserk over it, she is often found asleep on the very top, in a precarious position, 1/2 on, 1/2 off it,

Also stops her scratching away at the sofas!0
