He's a gorgeous boy and is obviously settling in nicely-Just time and patience now.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Glad to see Derek Martin is settling in well :rotfl: That yawning pic is awesome.
I second Tiglath - he's just getting used to his new world. Salem yowls in the night from time to time - no idea why but he usually ends up on my bed with one of his toys in his mouth. He generally drops it before me with a "look what I did mum" look on his face.ENFP - AssertiveOfficially in a clique of idiotsSmoke me a kipper; I'll be back for breakfast0 -
My cat Salem is a pain for meowing in the night. He is a very fussy cat and he does meow for us a lot when we shut him away somewhere.
We would let him in the bedroom but he knocks my ornmanets off and we get far more sleep with him in another room. We used to let him roam but he would constantly sctratch the bedroom door and also the carpet out side the bedroom door to get in. (The carpet is terrible outside the bedroom door now - thanks Salem)
So now he is shut away he still meows sometimesd mainly if you get up for the toilet , we have to go right past the room he is in. He oftens hears us and it starts. It also tends to happen early in the morning as well and he thinks we are gtting up and we often aren't
I see it as a sign they just want to spend time with us mere humans. They often gets lonely like us as well.INACTIVE ACCOUNT0 -
Thanks guys, I feel a bit more reassured about the nocturnal mewling now!
A few minutes ago Derek shuffled forwards on his little TV stand shelf and say there staring out around the room
Sadly OH went into the kitchen past the TV stand so he retreated back to his usual position, but here is is in his bravery:0 -
Give him a couple of weeks and he'll be IN your bed between you - he'll be positioning himself for winter, and you'll sleep in funny and uncomfortable positions to make sure he has enough space"Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000

hi martin! been a bit pushed for time so only now caught up on your thread!
am in lurve with Derek! he is beautiful! and you are doing fine! some cats are timid and take time to settle in - others establish their 'ground rules' from the minute they walk in the door!
just go about your daily lives - he is watching and learning! and plotting how to overthrow the current ruler!
in a couple of weeks he will be strutting around, confident in his 'Place in the Home'.
if Dreamies doesn't do it for him - Try Webbox Treat Sticks. my Barnes loves them. (but they are meant to be broken up into bite size pieces - which I didn't realise, and poor Barnes had to do a 'Sword Swallowing Trick' with them!).0 -
Thank you!
Little update - turns out he does like Dreamies, but only if you gently throw them into the TV stand so they land right by his head!
Also I managed to tempt him out very briefly with some tinned tuna on a plate - sadly I moved on the sofa a bit too vigorously and he scurried back into the stand before he'd finished...
Wondering if he will nip out again this evening before I go to bed at about 11...0 -
gently gently catchee cat!
don't throw the dreamies, place them in front of him. then stand well back!
poor kitty - he is scared. but, he WILL eventually trust you if you don't push it too hard and fast.
let him come to you - I know you want to be best buddies - but this poor cat is probably 'traumatised'. overused word I KNOW - but think about it...............he has lost his home, been in jail and now he is in a strangers home. he doesn't know how to behave, who to trust, or whether he is going to get moved on again. TIME will let him know he is in his forever home. and you MUST be patient with him, let him come round in his own time. but at the same time keep to the normal household routine. But Bribery is good! he may like Prawns or cheese and come out of hiding for them!0 -
Have you tied catnip? Mine go nuts for the 'nip!
Give it time -poor baby has probably been pushed from pillar to post and isn't used to having a forever home.
As meritaten says - just do what you normally do - he will eventually come out of hiding to assist you with your daily tasks. You will soon learn the joys of having a cat on your knee whilst on the loo.ENFP - AssertiveOfficially in a clique of idiotsSmoke me a kipper; I'll be back for breakfast0 -

My Jimmy is a very nervous cat, but he loves Dreamies so much he will gently take them out of my hand.
I remember one time, only last year (we had had him 3 years at this point) he was lying on my lap (which is a rare thing) and I had a can of Coke. I asked my OH to open it, as I knew the noise would make him bolt, so he opened it in the kitchen and brought it in to me, however, it was a waste of time as Jimmy got freaked out by the fizzing as I poured it and ran away anyway!0
