I find it incredulous that someone would part with a car worth £10,000 until the funds were cleared in the account.0

No way, and I have worked for banks my whole life!Early retired - 18th December 2014

In my experience, women are attentive to detail, and men have a more gung ho approach.
I do hope I have not offended your delicate sensibilities with my earlier jocular comment.Early retired - 18th December 2014

If you walked into a bank with £10,000 in cash, they may lose a £20 note or so, but they are not going to lose all of it! And since it's £20, they are likely to just credit you and figure it out later. Compare that to your 10K cheque...
(Plus they'll probably have you in an office asking to describe how you come across such an amount of cash, etc)0 -
Op did you specify which cheque was cleared when you queried your account balance?
Why phone at all when the information is on internet banking?
If you ask if there are any cheques to clear on my account and they say no they have given you correct information - did you ask whether you had £20k in the account or £30k??
It should be easy to get a duplicate cheque as long as first cheque has not been presented.
I also notice that you commented on nearly all the posts but mine - perhaps mine hit home and is the truth??0 -

So lets assume all the cheques were 10K for a moment and you had £1.23 in the account previously. You rang up and they said "Yes, your cleared account balance is currently £70001.23" ?
or was it just "Have the cheques I deposited now cleared" and they looked and said "Yes, the cheques you have deposited have now cleared", showing no indication to the number or value of the cheques.
I know that I'd be wanting the former.0 -
On your cheque deposit receipt that the bank gave you, is there an 'items' box with the number of cheques you deposited, if so this would strongly back your case as this would confirm how many physical cheques you handed over, RBS have this box on their deposit slips, so I hope Lloyds does.
As for their CCTV, I think they are definately fobbing you off, of course their cameras can see the cash exchange between the Customer and Cashier and therefore the Cheques that you handed over0 -
"I explained that the missing cheque was for my car and the new buyer was coming to collect it. Twice on separate calls I was told the there wasn't a problem with the money and it was just goin through extra checks.
The buyer collected my car on Thursday".
This is not being told the cheque had cleared.0
