I'm having a kitchen fitted at the moment (never realised it would be so stressful!) I got a range cooker, not used it properly but I love it. I've also got a floor to ceiling walk in larder cupboard. It is massive but I love it, will hold so much.
  • Greats - Pull out floor to ceiling larder

Regrets - My beautiful oak worktops - stunning to look at but totally impractical! Hubby and kids never wipe anything up so two years on and its a bit stained, although we can sand it back and re oil.

My only regret in my recently fitted new kitchen is going for a matt worktop for a change. It shows absolutely every crumb & streak & I intend having it replaced eventually,I just want to feel I've got my money's worth out of it first.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Agree - I forgot to mention this in my post above!

A really good idea to include bin & recycling cupboards.

oh yes the recycle bin! our council changed services last April we used to have a tall refuse bin in the kitchen but now find we only need one half the size but need a recycle bin in the kitchen too, I am currently trialling having them in the sink/draining board cupboard which seems to be working out ok, I think we need just 2 bins rather than the 4.

Sorry Cattie that you are disappointed with your worktops but thanks for being honest

Things I love in my new (small-ish) kitchen:

    - bin drawer (sad, I know)
    - narrow pull-out storage for oil, vinegar, herbs and spices next to the hob
    - LED lighting underneath the wall cupboards
    - my oak worktops (I don't have kids though)
    - deep pan drawers
    - bi-fold pull-up doors on the wall cupboards - very smooth operation.
    - I also have two hidden drawers in the plinth which are super useful in a small kitchen.

Wish I had gone for induction hob (I have gas).

Love: pull out drawer larder, pull our drawers for pans etc, swing out baskets for corner cupboards.

Dislike: bin drawer. I find it needs wiping all of the time as people aren't careful about where they chuck stuff, so food goes on the cupboard door/bin frame etc, and there's sometimes a characteristic bin smell if it's not emptied daily, which permeates the rest of the under sink cupboard.

I had mine done just under 2 years ago. Favourite features include the following:
Pan drawers, oven at eye level, porcelain floor tiles which don't show the dirt, Duromat laminate work surfaces (speckly matt design which also look new still and clean), glossy wall tiles & having a dishwasher.
Would have liked a pull out larder but not enough space and it was less important to me than the oven at eye level.

We had an extension built which left us room for 1.8m extra worktop with cupboards under and wall cupboards above.
Love - deep pan drawers, bin drawer like the one in the picture but just 2 compartments (rubbish and recycling).
Hate - small size dishwasher but it was already there and remodelling to fit a large one in would have been a massive job.

  • It's been quite a while since I did my kitchen and as well as some of the ideas above that I have in mine, I love my built in microwave as they take up such a lot of counter space. I've also got wall cupboards that go up to the ceiling. I don't have to clean the top of any cupboards and anything that would have gone on top of a cupboard is now kept on the top shelf and doesn't get grubby either.
I need to make a new list for 2014
think of something to put on it!:rotfl:
Try harder for 2014 as I never managed it in 2012 or 2013
