Blame the politicians, up to them to change the system. They were offered a demonstration of electronic voting systems and hardly any of them turned up.

There is absolutely no way I'd trust an electronic voting system for elections. It is way too open to being manipulated.

What's the problem with just waiting for the votes to be counted? It's completely open, transparent and there's a paper trail if there are any questions or disputes. If they really need more resources then allocate more budget.

Or do our politicians have more important things to do with their time?

It gives the tele something to whinge about. Their prepared stories couldn't be published so they had to fill paper with something... Anything.

Who remembers their classic about how mr Yeltsin enjoyed a delightful visit to ireland? Boozy boris was too drunk to even get off the plane, but the bt reported a trip to bunratty castle.

No apology for being a laughing stock there.

It's not an electronic voting system; it's an electronic *counting* system. There's a big difference.

If they are doing it all by hand, no wonder there are problems. They should enter the days from each slip into a database, but the button and get the results out. Time spent would be limited to data entry and validation.

no they get paid a fee for the count - which covers the count from beginning to end regardless of duration. This is why some did not return for day 2 - they had probably taken a day of annual leave to do the count and had to return to work. No doubt they will still be paid the full fee
