I don't think the 'free market' exists at all. Capitalism is broken, in the same way that Marxist economics is broken. People are inherently greedy, either knowingly or unknowingly. Someone is unlikely to complain if the value of their pension has risen, even though it rose because the companies the pension fund invested in laid off 150,000 people in order to keep the shareholders happy.
Broken, but probably the best we can do without strong willed leadership.
Agree with most of that. What worries me is that we tend to assume there is a free market and that it is of necessity good. All markets are regulated and need to be, question is whose interests the regulations favour. It is about getting the balance, can naked capitalism be made to be responsible, can we encourage people to invest in local businesses and opportunities etc.NI21s stated policies fall nicely into place with my own views. I think it has been long enough since the GFA that we should start dismantling the apparatus that maintains the illusion of sectarian divide. The POC and designation system in Stormont is a prime example. Alliance/Green and now NI21 voters cheated out of the democratic process because they want to vote for jobs and education rather than petty sectarian squabbles.
Broken.
Stormont is instutionalised sectarianism and that is just wrong.
Regarding NI21, from a Unionist point of view their position made, and makes strategic sense. Most Unionist Parties seem hell bent on repelling the catholic population. The defensive position of circling the wagons and digging in risks ultimate failure. The them and us, their gain our loss, isn't very clever and not at all constructive.[STRIKE]Less is more.[/STRIKE] No less is Less.0 -
Interesting that despite their help you wouldn't vote for them.
Didn't say I wouldn't, just haven't.... as I say I haven't always resided here in NI and in the time I have I've voted for many different parties usually based on the candidate rather than the party (Even voted for the Green Party once when living in Craigavon

I agree with this. You only have to look at the USA ,which is a country totally built around the values of a free market, to understand the need for regulating markets. Their markets are more regulated than ours from the stock market to selling double-glazing.0 -
Some interesting results in the council election. My imagination or a slight shift towards the centre?
Anyway wish all those elected the best. It takes a lot of time and effort to put yourself forward, and serving the public, as a Councillor, can be a full time job if you try to do it properly. Something many really don't appreciate.
Let's hope they do a good job.[STRIKE]Less is more.[/STRIKE] No less is Less.0 -
