Have just bought my Mum the small slow cooker and convinced her it wont boil dry or blow the house up while she is out. And lo and behold she just rang me and said she has soup cooking in it as we speak! Its a miracle! Also bought their gingham patterned replacement jam pot lids, because mine are always ruined by the chutneys etc. Other than that I love to pore over the catologue but run through the store as fast as possible.

I bought the pineapple slicer on the recommendations here and it really is fantastic. Wow I used to deslike preparing pineapples so maybe only bought one a few times a year and I am getting one a week now, even my dh got the hang of it

My tefal pressure cooker started going wrong and I decided not to do with the faff of spare parts as it was not an expensive one and from a tefal outlet, so I googled and got into a youtube video of a kuhn rikon in use. I googled some more and could only find good things about this one and I couldn`t believe my eyes to find it in lakeland. It is amazing, so simple and so safe. It arrived this morning and I have already cooked a bunch of beetroots. It is pretty silent too and I like the timing chart on the top of the lid. I have used pressure cookers for 52 years and yes I have also had the pea soup on the ceiling. This one doesn`t have bells and whistles but it is supposed to be the most safe and I certainly loved it this morning

Yet another A1 lakeland buy. No recipe book but we don`t need one with the timing chart. I kept the tefal steaming basket and it fits perfectly on top of the trivet so stews with steamed veg, here I come

Thanks for that Kittie, I've been thinking about a pressure cooker for ages, if nothing else it will be handy for all the beans I seem to cook! Will have a look at this one, the simpler the better for me!

The pineapple thingy is also on my list, having cored and peeled several in the past week, I have decided to invest, I'm sure it'll be more economical than the amount I lose when I do it with a knife!

btw I have the jam maker and I love it, I like the fact that it just makes a few jars, ideal for any cheap fruit I pick up in the supermarket, and I like the fact that I leave it to get on with it. Basically it means that we have a greater range of preserves. I still do vats of marmalade, apple chutney and strawberry jam the usual way.

 to the soup maker! Never come across that before, don't think it'll be making its way into my house, but then I doubt it'd make enough soup to go round my lot!

  • I love my jammaker too. Small quantities of low sugar somewhat runny jam to eat on HM yoghurt. yum. I used to toil for hours over a vat of steaming jam to make far too much of it, usually too set, which always got thrown away because we couldn't eat it all. The jammaker is really foolproof and - which I think is The Thing - just fits my life.
Pineapple thingie a miracle - was given one many years ago by an old aunt who said she'd revived her love of pineapples just because she had one.

I did think the soup machine looked good UNTIL I saw the price - saucepan and stick blender will certainly do me, and I possibly have no need of the martini mixer (). But I was wondering about the pressure cooker that cooks at lower pressure and you can add stuff to it very easily - has anyone got one of those ?
  • The poaching pods are to be recommended. Easy to use, easy to clean, perfect poached eggs in 5 mins. Much better than scraping cooked egg off the metal ones. Also husband friendly, an added bonus.

Poached eggs was one thing I just couldn't master no matter how many times and which method of poaching I tried. I found it very frustrating because I'm a reasonably competent cook and can manage most things but a simple thing like poached eggs defeated me.

And to make matters worse my OH can make perfect poached eggs just by dropping them in the pan.

The poaching pods have been my saviour, perfect eggs every time, I love them. :o

  • Please can you tell me what you do to get good poached eggs in the pod ? I tried - I didn't butter the pod (was teying to be lo-fat) put egg in pod and pod into boiling water. It took ages to cook and then I couldn't get it out of the pod, and had to scoop it out with a spoon, breaking the (runny) yolk. What do you do please ?
  • regarding the poach pods it is easier if you add a little oil to the bottom of the pods. Placing a lid on the saucepan will cook them quicker. hope this helps

I always rub a little butter around the pod, add the egg, pop it in about an inch or two of boiling water, put the lid on and let it gently simmer for about 4 minutes. I don't time it, I just do it by eye.
