I agree with this.
There are people in the Money Savers Arms that are on there for 18 hours a day and that surely can't be just a healthy interest.0 -
I don't think the issue is Facebook, but more that Facebook is just another indicator of how people/manners/standards have changed.
I am one who checks her phone everytime it goes off no matter where I am, but only if DD2 isn't with me. If she is with someone else then I check who it is in case she has had a seizure (she has epilepsy amongst other health issues), but everyone I know knows this is why I check and if it's just another friend or whatever then I wouldn't dream of answering and having a conversation on the phone whilst others were there.
Facebook is an easy way to keep in touch with family and friends who don't live close by. It does mean our profiles are mostly photos of the kids, reminders about such-and-such's birthday part and other probably boring stuff, but that's just what we use it for.
I will, while on holiday, upload photos every 3/4 days, but that's mainly because I had my camera stolen once and I was gutted to have lost all the photos from my DD2's first ever holiday. Also although the photos of the kids are to share if I post loads of photos (like i posted tonnes from a trip to Silverstone last year) I don't actually expect people to sift through every single one - it's just an online back up and to share with those who were there.
Personally I think Facebook has been useful when it comes to annoying friends. Rather than being annoying by ringing all the time and pestering they now post endlessly on Facebook. It's also much easier to learn with new friends who is discreet and who isn't. With one Mum from toddlers a few years back it was several "send them all home" type statuses that flagged up that she was a deeply unpleasant racist.
I don't think phones or social media have made people rude, I just think they have helped flag up rude people.0 -
Oh....so you didn't mean that Facebook is for people who are sad and lonely. You only meant that some of its users are sad and lonely?
Why didn't you say so then?!
It's called moving the goalposts to fit the agenda. :rotfl:
Some people will say something derogatory, and then alter what they have said slightly to suit their argument. :rotfl:
For the record, I spend about 3 hours a week on facebook, and maybe between 3 and 4 hours a week on here. And about 10 minutes a day on twitter. Less than most people I know INCLUDING professionals and happily married people. (Of which I am one.) PMSL. And on that note, I am logging off to make dinner.Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!
You're not singing anymore........ You're not singing any-more!0 -
Technology allows people to have constant interaction with each other, access to information and updates from all manner of social media. Problems occur when this becomes a constant need for some. When I am out socialising with friends, I see people sat with their heads in their phones, and they are barely conversing or taking any notice of those they are with. No doubt too busy simultaneously updating facebook, about how they are having a fab time with the ones they are actually ignoring! The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0

Agree with this. Life is what passes you by whilst you're too busy on phone / FB etc to notice.
It's a bit like playing footy on the Xbox when you could just go out for a kick around instead.0 -
Thinking about it more I think someone sat in company on their phone is like the new version of the person who didn't let anyone else get a word in edgeways.0

I also how many happily married people with a full social life and are truly happy in their life use Facebook everyday to update their 'friends' that they just stepped in a puddle or some other inane incident?
I'd hazard a guess. Not many.....
In my experience, the most avid users of 'social' media are the loneliest amongst us, they crave interaction and attention and can only achieve it in cyberspace....
Not sure what their job title has to do with anything, I have several scientists and one doctor on my FB friends list and they are all regular users of the site0 -
OH and I were out for a drink with a group of friends. Average age was 45-50. One of my friends teenage (age 16+) "children" and friends turned up and sat at a different table.
It was amusing to see the teens laughing and chatting with each other while most of the adults were engrossed in their phones.0
