I got rid of my 'smart' phone about 18 months ago....
It's chewing gum for the brain. it's sad that millions of people seem to only enjoy chewing gum......
I'm only 31, so not from a different generation.
Disagree totally. I use it to contact people and chat away to people who I rarely see (old friends and family who don't live nearby.) There may be some attention - seekers on facebook, but many people use it to contact people they rarely see. It can be a lifeline for some.
Many people don't get/can't get out much, and facebook and twitter are really important. I love twitter.
That is a bit of a sweeping generalisation and pretty rude.
Why do people have to be so rude?Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!

What utter tosh. So my grandparents in their late seventies who use Facebook to keep in touch with old childhood friends who live in the US are 'sad, lonely and stupid'? Charming!0 -
Someone who I thought was a friend deleted me on facebook after having a go at me for not communicating enough with her. Apparantly my replies to her posts were "too short" and I never "liked" anything she posted anymore. She'd asked me there was a problem, I said no there wasn't, I was just busy, and I was told to that response was too short too and that I was being deleted and she no longer wanted to be friends.
People need to get a grip!Officially in a clique of idiots0 -

Why do people have to be so rude?
I wonder how many Dr's, Lawyers and Scientists are on Facebook every day, mindlessly scrolling down their 'news-feed' to see what their 'friends' are doing?
I also how many happily married people with a full social life and are truly happy in their life use Facebook everyday to update their 'friends' that they just stepped in a puddle or some other inane incident?
I'd hazard a guess. Not many.....
In my experience, the most avid users of 'social' media are the loneliest amongst us, they crave interaction and attention and can only achieve it in cyberspace....We’ve had to remove your signature. Obviously, there are people who use Facebook constructively, I'd imagine your Grandparents would fall into that category......It's a means to an end for them.
I'm sure your Grandparents don't post photos of what they had for dinner or selfie after selfieWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Amazing - I have a wide group of friends and we all manage to stay in touch by email without a Facebook account. If people come to dinner there's a jug of water in the table and I say to any new comers who don't know the drill "the water's not for drinking. It's for drowning the mobile phone of the first person who dares to use it during the meal". People laugh, but they get the message!0

Wow, judgemental much? :rotfl: Seems like you know everything about everyone. Amazing.
What a load of absolute rubbish! Did you actually READ this before you posted? If not, you should have!
I actually know many people who are professional and 'happily married' (I myself am happily married) who like to spend time on social media. So what?
And as for your last paragraph. What double standards! Here you are critisizing people in cyberspace, like they are lonely with no life - and stupid (as people who are 'professionals' supposedly never use social media or wander into cyberspace!) and yet here are YOU on an internet message forum.Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!

I don't think we should be taking 'bigjock's' comments very seriously.

Oh....so you didn't mean that Facebook is for people who are sad and lonely. You only meant that some of its users are sad and lonely?
Why didn't you say so then?!0
