The children were 10 and 11. They were actually all girls, as far as I'm aware. The ones that have been suspended were girls certainly.

I think a sentence like the one I used, that described the subject matter without the actual conversation might have been more appropriate.

IME the girls are far worse than the boys!

    Wow.
Yeah, i'd probably agree that girls are worse than boys when it comes to bullying etc, but I can't really imagine girls of that age talking about rape, oral sex and beastiality etc!
    Jeesh....

It's horrible isn't it. The poor kids, I do feel sorry for them that they've been allowed to learn these terms when they are so young. I do feel though that parents that allow this to happen are the least likely to actually do anything in response.

You should have seen a note then that I confiscated from a group of year 7 girls (aged 11) a couple of years ago - sounds similar to if not worse than what the OP has described. Referred very explicitly to sexual practices I genuinely hadn't even heard of until I was about 20 (and I have not exactly been a shy flower in that respect). Horrifying to come from sweet, prepubescent little girls. I have also seen very explicit disgusting things written in the backs of girls' exercise books etc. Horrible.

As for the OP I am afraid I agree with the others that the school has been responsible in alerting parents to exactly what has gone on. Furthermore, although you say the girls are 'not in your daughter's class' - this is just one conversation that they have seen. It is very doubtful it is the only one of this kind and that these are the only children talking in this way - it is just the only one they know about! S I would not be at all sure that the children who sit next to your daughter in class are not capable of exactly the same talk.

So you'd all be quite happy to receive a letter from a primary school with explicit language that would get you banned from this forum? OK, I'll take that on board.

No, I certainly would not be happy to receive it - but I would appreciate the reasons for it being sent. I can imagine just how upset that you must have been in receiving it - but sadly, this is what our children - who are little more than babies after all - are being exposed to - without parents being aware. The school has now woken all the parents to the fact that this is the environment that they have been exposed to, and the school is doing something about it - and is asking the parents for their co-operation in ensuring that these children know how wrong it is.

Our school give the kids ALL letters to bring out, 9/10 times the children come out reading them.

I wouldn't be best pleased, BUT obviously the headteacher felt she had to make it `shocking`.

Did it come sealed and addressed to you?

However I don't feel it was necessary to deliberately shock the parents of over 60 children.

You're all adults aren't you? The letter is for you the parents to read, not the children, so I really don't see the problem. Isn't it best to be informed and kept in the loop about what is happening? I don't think the school has done anything wrong on this occasion.

I wouldn't be happy to get the letter because that letter means those types of words and phrases are being used by children in your child's class.

I would be less happy if my child turned around and said, "Mummy, what is rape/blow jobs/whatever?" from nowhere and then discovered from the school that they'd had an issue, but hadn't informed me.

Look at it this way, if they had send a letter telling you that some children had been using "inappropriate language" would you have dreamt of the extent of it?

It's not pleasant, not pleasant at all, but the facts are these words are being used by children in the class and you, as a parent, have a right (and imo a need) to know this so that you can keep an eye (and an ear) out for your child and what they are, potentially, being exposed too.

The letter was addressed to "The Parent or Carer of Ellie Jones" (name changed). I presumed it was something to do with the imminent move to secondary school, or possibly a health check. It came in the post. I did think there was a danger that if Ellie Jones had been the first person to pick up the post, then she might have opened it herself.

The school sent the transcript to illustrate the full reality (and horror) of what has happened.

If they'd sanitised it into a summary then it wouldn't have had the same impact.

You are an adult (and a parent with responsibilities) so you need to face the unpleasantness that sometimes comes from the wider world.

I'm not a 'slumbering parent' though. My daughter doesn't access any social networks. We keep an eye on what she is using her mobile phone for (she only got one for Christmas this year). The only computer she has access to is in the lounge and she asks us before she uses it. We keep an eye on how she uses it.

I don't really see why I should be shocked by explicit language, when it is nothing to do with my child.

And yet you believe that, given half a chance, she'd read a letter addressed to someone else.
