you should maybe try a training program for 5k if that's what you want to do distance wise - rather than always doing the same training runs you will do a mix of distances/paces in training plans which should help with fitness and building confidence/experience of different paces

if you just run the same distance/pace in all your training runs your progress will likely drop off, you may get bored and chance of injuries increase

Thanks, I gave a parkrun a go today, that sped things up with targets to chase down :)

Hi everyone. I hope its oknto join. I need some inspiration.

I started running a few months ago using the C25k app. I was OK for the first week but came down with a virus and stopped. It was also very hot at the time which i found difficult. Im going to start again and wondered if there is a better way rather than the app.

I'm currently three stone overweight and really struggle with stamina. Any tips would be welcome.

There's really two possible ways of starting. There's C25K or you could devise your own plan where you alternate running and walking and gradually increase the running. Or you could just run as far as you can and then walk home. There's a book that I hate but it has it's fans called Run, Fat !!!!! Run which has this method (plus a lot of shouty advice|!). But pretty well everyone I've come across swears by C25K. The great thing about it is that you can see your progress increase every week.

Good luck - you'll love it once you get back into it

    Thanks Barbarawright

I have read that book and it irritated me to be honest. I think I will stick to the C25k method. If I just run as far as I can then walk home I won't get very far.:rotfl:

I did enjoy it when I did it. I'm not a huge exercise fan and I think it has to be something I enjoy stick to it

  • Well, I progressed a bit last week after the leg/knee trouble the last couple of months. Mon-Thursday each day I did 3k (with no pain!!!). Have been away on a mini-cruise sat-tuesday though so haven't ran since. Hoping to get out tomorrow, then do my 50th Parkrun on Saturday, however the weather forecast is awful.
  • I have a Leadership in Running Fitness qualification from Run England and lead C25K courses in the Worcestershire area. Having seen a few hundred people complete the C25K course over the past 18 months, I can tell you that if you stick with it and do your 3 weekly runs - it does work.

It is far better to find someone else to do the course with or find out if your local council have any courses running.

Speed is not important when doing C25K, it's time on your feet that counts. Just keep moving. If you find yourself getting tired during one of the run segments - simply slow down your pace.

Write down on a piece of paper your motivation for doing the course and each time you don't feel like going out - read it again and force yourself out of the door whatever the weather. It's only rain - not acid :rotfl:

You will definitely see a benefit to your health (physical and mental). It will also help with weight loss but only if you change your diet at the same time. Once you complete the course, don't stop there - it's just the beginning. Good Luck:beer:

How do you guys motivate yourself to get up and go running?
Whilst I am fairly fit, I find the actual act of running does not motivate me particularly, and as such I have only managed 4 runs since I decided to start in the last month or so. (All 3.5 miles apart from one fell run of 4miles)
Whilst I enjoyed the fell run I would like to get some mileage under my belt before undertaking more as it was hard work. (Good fun though and will def do some more at some stage)
My 5k times so far are have been around 24mins, now whilst I would like to get this time down I would also like to increase distance.

So what do you guys do to get yourself out there running?

Entering a race a few months ahead can give you a focus to train.
I find that I enjoy running on my own when I want to switch off from the daily grind. However, I also enjoy running with a group. We are fortunate in my area that there are loads of different running groups catering for all abilities and purposes - mainly populated by people from our local parkrun. Whether it be social running or groups to improve speed, distance etc. Ask around at your local parkrun or search facebook for informal running groups in your area. Depending on where you live - get off the tarmac and onto the trail as it's far more interesting.

To improve distance and speed, you need to vary your runs during the week. Running the same distance at the same pace will get you so far but at some point you will hit a plateau. 3 runs for the week should include intervals, track repeats (don't need a running track) and a long run. You can't get faster unless you train faster. You can't improve your distance unless you extend your runs. For longer runs, run at a slower pace than your 5K and extend the distance gradually.

Thanks CashSaver, some good suggestions there.
I have managed to get in 4 parkruns so far (despite being an hours drive away), and had a PB on each occasion so the times are coming down. 21:40 last week. I have managed to free up an hour or so a couple of nights a week, so have been getting 6-7 miles done at a slower tempo of 8mins a mile. And tried to do some interval sprints on other occasions. So i think that it is getting there.

I would like to join a running club, but they all seem to meet on a Tue and Thurs! Both of which I am already busy.
I am looking to do some 10k's next year but I would like to be a tad faster before attempting those.
Hopefully I will have some time on my own to get over to the lake district to spend a couple of days walking / running next summer.

Completed my first half marathon :) it started as a gentle training run of 7 miles at a gentle pace, but figured that i may as well keep going for a bit.

Whilst it wasn't quick it was run with a backpack on in preparation for next week in the peak district :)

What do you guys recommend to nibble on when running? I fear I will need some energy for running up the hills.
