  • Well I did the Vegas 5k in 38:06. That's two minutes quicker than the park run I did before we came away. I did stop and walk a couple of times as the sun was pretty hot but I'm happy with that time.

That was easier than expected. Managed to get a new pair of running shoes which weren't too expensive. Just hope I can get some decent mileage out of them.

Wow, that was brilliant!! Perhaps the dry heat is better than the humidity at home as well.

    Good trip?

I think the time may have more to do with the fact that we spent the 10 nights prior to Vegas at altitude (we went to Yellowstone, Boulder, Grand Junction and Bryce Canyon). We did plenty of walking and ran a few times - I really struggled and only managed to do about 2k - but it must have had some effect. I didn't feel out of breath in Vegas until I got to about 3k. I'll be interested to see if I can match that time now I'm back home.

Our trip was fantastic, I'm just sad it's over. How was yours? Are you like us, already planning the next one?

Sounds like a really interesting trip!! You did a lot more than us. In May we did San Diego & Vegas, this time was just Vegas, though we did do 3 hotels. First was GVR, I did 2 x 3k on the treadmill. Struggled with my knee. Then I did a 3k outside on Howard Hughes Blvd, again struggled with my knee. I did Parkrun last Saturday and it was absolute hell with my knee (but was determined to keep up with hubby as he was unwell at parkrun last year so I don't like leaving him to run on his own now). This week someone else ran with him so I had to jog/walk from 1 1/2km with the damn knee so it's getting worse. I'm really annoyed. Sounds like IT band which can be a long term problem. I'm just getting back into my tennis too after having tennis elbow in the summer! :(

Not planning for next year yet, I'm in between jobs just now. I'm only just out of work though and hope to get something soon so will see how that goes before booking anything else. We had fab weather, hopefully you did too!
  • Please can I join?
I started running in January to improve my health. Have had a couple of false-starts but have now pretty much found my level and try not to push myself too hard as I end up hurting myself and then not running for a couple of weeks, and then trying to carry on where I left of - so am trying the "little and often" way for now. Just a couple of miles every other night and see how it goes.

I dont run very fast, but am still quite proud of what I have achieved in this first year but realise I am never going to be winning any races.

i have also been using the Zombies Running app which is great fun and a great motivator!

Does anyone else have the same problem as me?

I run on average about 3.5miles (have done it about 10 times now) and no matter what i do the 2nd mile is always slow compared to the first and third. It is generally around 7:50. Even if I run the first mile around 6:50 or 7:50!!!
Then the 3rd mile I seem to run about 7:20 no matter what speed I do the first one.
Its very frustrating not knowing why I can't seem to run the 2nd mile the same speed as the others!

Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me!

How do you feel during that 2nd mile? Does it feel as hard as the others or do you think you don't push as hard?

At running club, we do something very much like this as a drill. After a good warm up, we run a mile at race pace plus 15-20 seconds or so. Then fully recover. Then do it again, aiming for the exact same time as the previous lap. And repeat. And maybe repeat again. The idea isn't to go as fast as you can, just to practice running at a set pace and stay there whether your legs are fresh or tired.

Practice practice practice. Or a good running watch :)

I feel as if I am running the same pace as the first mile and the third miles. But I am clearly not.
As I say it doesn't matter if I really back down on the times for the first mile the 2nd mile is always slower than target.

Maybe it is just a quirk of my running and it will sort itself out as I get fitter. I am only just embarking on this running journey.

you should maybe try a training program for 5k if that's what you want to do distance wise - rather than always doing the same training runs you will do a mix of distances/paces in training plans which should help with fitness and building confidence/experience of different paces

if you just run the same distance/pace in all your training runs your progress will likely drop off, you may get bored and chance of injuries increase
