Probably a good idea to get one under your belt, even if you go slow it's still going to help. If you find it hot at home though you're going to find it really rather hot in Vegas...unless it cools down quite a bit!

We're boarding our flight shortly from Philly to Vegas, and it's to be 106F tomorrow! I found a running group at The Distsrict at GVR, I might go to that tomorrow morning, but they do 5 miles and I think it's a bit long for me (just now, and in that heat!!). I might go along and speak to them and then go for my own slow jog. I've no idea where near there would be good for jogging around with sidewalks etc. Don't like having to wait for crossings when out running. Have brought my garmin though, so I'm really hoping I can at least try a jog outside! Failing that would have to be the treadmill.

Ooh, have a great holiday Lesley (it's pretty hard not to in Vegas!). Are you going anywhere else on this trip?

106 is very hot, I think the hottest we've had is 107 in September a few years ago. Walking any distance in that was hard enough, running would be impossible. The 5k starts at half 7 in the morning so hopefully it will be a bit cooler or else I'll be walking the whole way.

We're lucky where we live as we have a park less than 5 minutes walk away so the crossing roads issue doesnt come up. I don't think I'd be able to get used to that now and would probably choose the treadmill over that option.

I did the parkrun in 40m26s. I was worried about coming in last, way behind everyone else, but there was one other woman behind me so at least I didn't embarrass myself. Everyone was lovely and the marshalls were encouraging so that helped and I have a target to beat next time.

I can't remember if you said you had done parkrun before - is that a first? Dont' worry about your time, gives you something to improve on anyway.

I had thought on going to a running group at GVR this morning, but I woke up during the night and went back to sleep and woke just after 6am when it started. It was 28C according to my phone so I din't think I could have done it anyway!!

I have a route at home that has crossings but it's a sort of busy road and not many people turn off it so it tends to work quite well. I could also go to our esplanade where our parkrun is, but I'd probably drive down there if I did that so I'd rather just come out the house, plus it means I get a different route!

Let us know how the run goes in a few weeks....I think it will be tough in the heat but hopefully by then it will be cooling down a bit more during the night.

Hi everyone, can I join you please. Started running in May, I've done a couple of 10ks now, hoping to build up to HM next year. I only get out 2 or 3 times a week as I have two small people and a hubby working shifts, but I've definitely got the running bug now and love seeing what my body is capable of, it amazes me that 4 months ago I struggled to run for 60 seconds and now I can run for 60 minutes quite happily.

Hello and welcome to this thread. You've done fantastically to get to 10k in four months. I'm still struggling with 5k after 5 months of running although part of that has been the heat. Good luck with the HM training!
  • Hi everyone, just thought I'd say I'm still lurking!

I have to confess that I've now been back from holiday for two weeks and haven't got started again. It's the weather, I allowed the heat to put me off in the summer and now I'm blaming the rain :o. I don't have a jacket so that's the main issue although I think I'll leave the wet runs until I'm more serious.

I did however do lots of walking on holiday and some days I clocked over 15000 steps per fitbit and one day I 'climbed' 102 floors so I wasn't shirking :D

Anyway, I've checked the forecast for the next couple of days and it looks better so I'm aiming to get going soon. I know that once I've done my first one I'll be back into it, I'm planning on going back to week 2 and virtually starting again. Will keep you updated!
  • Also meant to say welcome Dinah93 and hope you're having a great time in Las Vegas Lesley74!
  • I'm doing an HM at the weekend for which I am woefully undertrained. I'm fairly sure I'll get round somehow - however I am slightly embarassed that a bunch of much fitter friends will be waiting at least an hour for me though i have told them that they will have had plenty of time to queue in the beer tent for supplies  :rotfl:
  • Ok, Cottyh24 - I've just done my first outdoor run ever in Vegas! Was about 820 am, so later than you will be doing yours and it was actually ok! I only did 3k as I've been getting a sore knee and I like 3k anyway :) Wasn't much slower than at home and didn't have much bother with the heat. If anything less sweaty than at home as it's so dry here!

I'm sure you'll be fine. You looking forward to your trip?

That sounds promising Lesley, maybe it won't be as bad as I'm imagining. 3k seems to be my go to distance too.

Alarm just gone off at 5.10am so that can only mean one thing: holiday! Looking forward to it so much, just wish there was a quicker way to get to Vegas than flying!
